If you’ve strolled through Scarborough in recent years, chances are you’ve clocked the old Wild Fig site and thought the same thing we did: what a missed opportunity. With uninterrupted ocean views and a slightly calmer energy than the other end of Scarborough, the charming corner spot always felt destined for something special. So to see it finally come back to life? We’re thrilled.

Introducing Brighton Wine Bar, a lovely new 150-seat local built for relaxed evenings by the coast.

Co-owned by Scarborough family members Ben Randall, Marion McAllister and Lauren Nolan, Brighton takes a proudly local-first approach.

“Every decision, from what’s on the plate to what’s poured into the glass, reflects the close relationships we’ve built with local producers and suppliers,” explains Randall.

The drinks list, curated by wine expert Adam Collet, is all Australian, with the majority poured from WA vineyards, spanning everything from crisp sparkling to fuller-bodied reds. And with a fancy enomatic wine machine keeping things fresh, longer, you can try more premium drops by the glass.

Beyond wine, you’ll find local tap beers and a handful of Australiana-leaning cocktails, including a fun Tim Tam espresso martini that has our name on it.

In the kitchen, Chef Ivan Bayona keeps the local love going across a Mediterranean-inspired menu perfectly suited to its oceanfront locale. Fremantle octopus, Shark Bay tiger prawns and Abrolhos scallops headline, alongside fresh-baked focaccia, handmade seafood ravioli and generous share plates that make settling in for the afternoon very easy. There’s thoughtful consideration for different dietary needs too.

The venue itself has been treated with equal consideration, with decor details that read architectural and elegant. From the incredibly detailed curved recycled brick bar to the handcrafted pendant lights and wall sconces, everywhere you look is a show of local craftmanship and care. Pretty impressive considering the view could have easily done all the heavy lifting here.

“We have a prime position to watch the sun setting over the Indian Ocean, but we hope what keeps guests coming back is our laid-back and approachable, yet refined vibe,” says Randall.

Brighton Wine Bar is now open seven days a week, from 11am til late, at 190 The Esplanade, Scarborough.
