What’s On in Hobart This Month: Food & Drink

Biji Dining at The Branch, Swansea

Biji Dining has rolled into Swansea for the summer, bringing their spice-bright cooking back across the Bass Strait and into Kelsey Walker’s lovingly reimagined old-bank tapas bar. Chef Harry Mangat and his wife, Sandy Soerjadhi, settle in as if returning to friends, shaping Indian-inspired plates with seasonal Tassie produce and the family stories that anchor their roaming kitchen. Bright, clever dishes land as crisp snacks and generous share plates, made for sea-breezy evenings and golden-hour cocktails. The mood is easy, the welcome heartfelt, and the menu shifts with whatever the coast offers up. A limited-time pop-up adding genuine warmth to the East Coast — and absolutely worth the road trip.

MONA 2025, Arcangelo Sassoli

In the end, the beginning — Arcangelo Sassolino at MONA

Industrial materials meet elemental force in this jaw-dropping MONA exhibition from Italian sculptor Arcangelo Sassolino. Think: steel melting mid-air, glass straining under rock, and tyres squeezed to breaking point. Using heat, gravity and immense pressure, Sassolino explores change as a moment of truth — a flash of destruction, renewal and transformation. It’s physical. It’s philosophical. It’s like nothing you’ve seen before.

Curated by Sarah Wallace, Jarrod Rawlins and Olivier Varenne.

Until April 6th, 2026

MONA, Hobart

Mirrorscape at Mona (Image Credit: Mona, Jessi Hunniford)

Check out Théo Mercier’s Mirrorscape at MONA

While you’re at MONA, French artist and stage director Théo Mercier has transformed the museum’s former library into a haunting, otherworldly installation, crafted entirely from locally sourced sand. Created on-site with the help of expert sand sculptors, Mirrorscape presents a catastrophic landscape suspended in time: a scene that might follow a landslide, tsunami, or bomb blast.

Enclosed behind glass and flanked by aluminium panels, the work evokes a laboratory specimen, a fossil, or perhaps a prophecy. Inspired by Tasmania’s ever-shifting sandstone formations and local detritus, Mercier’s immersive diorama blurs the lines between past and future, art and aftermath — an eerie vision of what was, or what’s to come.

In very welcome culinary news, beloved winery Devil’s Corner has opened a brand new onsite restaurant to highlight regional produce and, of course, the winery’s own drops.

Worth the road trip, Devil’s Corner Kitchen is helmed by Chef Jack Bennett (Ex-The Chophouse). Naturally, the menu is wine-led and designed to be paired with a full suite of wines from Devil’s Corner’s range. Think flame, smoke and seasonal ingredients. Elevated pizzas take pride of place on the menu with Chardonnay-braised pork belly, duck and confit garlic and three cheese with walnuts and rosemary all up for grabs.
