Annapurna

Hobart is a foodie destination, so pretty much every cuisine has strong representation in the Tassie capital – and thankfully for fans of spice, there’s plenty of top-notch Indian restaurants around.

Chefs at Hobart’s Indian restaurants make the most of Tasmania’s plentiful fresh produce, from using local lamb and goat for curries to freshly-grown herbs to add zing and flavour to every dish.

If you’re craving a zesty curry, flavourful dhal, fluffy naan or a crisp onion bhaji, you won’t need to look far to find the best Indian restaurants in Hobart. From local curry houses, elevated restaurants and beloved food trucks, your butter chicken or beef madras fix isn’t far away. Read on for our picks.

Indian Culture

Indian Culture

Hugely popular North Hobart institution Indian Culture is so popular, they had to open a Salamanca outpost too. Rated by many locals as the best Indian restaurant in Hobart, Indian Culture isn’t your standard takeaway curry joint (although there’s some of those in this list!). Eating here is a more elevated experience, with head chef Pooja Dureja dedicated to experimenting with local ingredients to make traditional Indian dishes that truly wow your taste buds. Go for the Kashmiri lamb rogan josh (the restaurant’s most-ordered meal) or for vegetarians, the Malai Kofta – potato and cottage cheese dumplings in a tomato and cardamom sauce.

Sacred Bites

Sacred Bites

Modern Indian restaurant Sacred Bites has one foot in the past and one firmly planted in the present, with a menu that manages to combine traditional Indian dishes with edgy fusion-inspired bites. In the same sitting, you can order a classic butter chicken or beef vindaloo as your main and pick something more out-there as a starter – why not try the chicken tikka tacos or the pulled sticky spiced pork bao bun? Aside from its adventures into fusion, the real highlight of Sacred Bites is its Feed Us menu. For $58pp the staff will just keep bringing out food until you can’t even fit in one more bite of naan.

Magic Curries

Tucked away in the historic Hobart neighbourhood of Battery Point, Magic Curries is a brightly-decorated and welcoming family-run Indian restaurant specialising in flavourful Punjabi cuisine. Cosy up around the wood fire in the cooler months and order a sizzling tandoor platter, tangy mango chicken or melt-in your mouth lamb biryani with a garlic naan to mop it all up. Or, pop in for a takeout and enjoy a lazy night at home.

Spice on Wheels

Spice on Wheels

If you’re looking for the best Indian restaurant for takeaway in Hobart, Spice on Wheels is up there. It first originated as a food truck and became so popular that the owners had to get a bricks and mortar space, but clearly the name stuck! While there is some seating at the popular New Town establishment, it’s pretty casual – the picnic tables outside are a nice place to grab a bite during summer. Spice on Wheels feels more like a takeout joint at heart, a place where you order food to go and leave with three heaving bags of curries, naans and an ice-cold mango lassi.

Culinary King

Culinary King

Another humble local northside favourite, Culinary King is run by a husband and wife duo and is loved by locals for takeaway or stopping by for a casual (yet hearty) feed with a BYO wine in hand. Regulars rave about Culinary King’s crispy samosas, butter chicken and goat curry, and one of the best parts about a meal here is that you can adjust the spice level, whether you’re a fiend for fire or more faint-hearted!

Annapurna

Annapurna

Aptly named for the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment, popular Indian restaurant Annapurna has Hobart covered, with two restaurants – one in North Hobart and one across the Tasman Bridge in Bellerive on the Eastern Shore. If you want to dine in, there are three types of banquets with a chef’s selection of curries, rice, naan breads and even appetisers and desserts if you want to go all out. Annapurna is equally good for takeaway, with a huge menu featuring every beef, chicken, lamb, goat, seafood and vegetarian curry you can possibly think of.

Pocket Curries (Image Credit: @pocketcurries)

Pocket Curries

While not technically a restaurant, Pocket Curries is a staple of Indian-inspired cuisine in Hobart. You’ll see this food truck popping up at lots of local markets, including every Saturday at Tasmania’s most famous weekly event, the Salamanca Market. While you may think wandering around market stalls and devouring a curry do not go hand-in-hand, but in this case they quite literally do! Pocket Curries serves up handheld butter chicken, mixed veg or tarka dhal curries, helpfully wrapped in a flatbread so you can eat it on the go and enjoy a carby treat at the end. Genius.
