On a random Tuesday night, my coworker and I found ourselves heading to a social club mahjong evening with No Flowers. We were a little apprehensive, but mostly excited to see what this new wave of social clubs was all about and whether we could make any sense of the game that seems to have taken over Sydney lately.
We arrived at Sakura House to find a bustling room filled with people of all ages who were all there for the same reason; to play mahjong, meet new people and try something a little different. Within minutes, we were sitting at a table with two women we’d never met, staring down a collection of tiles and trying to work out what we were supposed to do with them. It was scary, but it also felt good to be a complete beginner at something again.
I won’t lie, I found it hard. Thankfully, there were helpers stationed around the room to guide us through the rules and point us in the right direction when we inevitably got stuck. But, somewhere between trying to remember which tiles did what, chatting to the women at our table and slowly getting the hang of it, I realised I’d hadn’t touched my phone once.
For the next hour and a half, nobody was scrolling or half-listening while checking a notification. Everyone was just there, focused on the game and the people sitting around them. TThen, somehow, I won the final round and left on an absolute high. I was checking my calendar for the next one before I’d even made it home. So, if you’re looking for a social activity that doesn’t involve shouting over a DJ or making small talk over a drink, mahjong might just be your new thing… it’s definitely mine!
