Book in Some Me Time: The Best Things to do Alone in Sydney

Fill your cup with this edit of things to do alone in Sydney.

Capybara

Time spent solo can fill our cup, recharge our batteries and create space for creativity. But in our increasingly connected world, it's not something we often carve out time for. It's also not something many people regularly practice so it can be difficult to know what to do or where to start. Today, we've gathered up a few ideas unique to Sydney to encourage you to create space for a little bit of solo time this summer. Read on for a few ideas of things to do alone in Sydney...

Golden Age Cinema

Catch a Flick at Golden Age Cinema

The Golden Age Cinema is the perfect place to pop your solo-movie-watching cherry. This teeny art-deco cinema is a lot less intimidating than your standard 150-seat cinema complex. Best of all, you're encouraged to take one of the on-site bar's delicious cocktails in with you. On top of some current films, Golden Age specialises in screening classics, cult favourites and a smattering of scary stuff. A haven for film buffs, you won't be the only one flying solo here.

78-80 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills

McIver's Ladies Baths

McIver's Ladies Baths

Sorry guys, this one is just for the girls. This historic ocean pool has been in operation since 1922 and is still reserved for the exclusive use of women and children up to the age of 12. Entry for a swim will only set you back $2.50 but will grant you access to the large sea pool, sunbathing area, change rooms and sunroom. Quiet is encouraged so you can expect an extra relaxing day with your book by the sea.

Beach Street, Coogee

Art Gallery of NSW

Late Night at the Art Gallery

Work in a little me-time midweek with the Art Gallery of NSW's extended opening hours. Every Wednesday, you can swing by after work to soak up a heap of culture. There's a pop-up bar to sort you for drinks and snacks and a program of events including guided tours, film screenings, talks and performances.

Until 10pm on Wednesdays

Art Gallery Road, The Domain

Head Out for a Meal Solo

Hear us out! Sydney's dining scene is so good right now that you can't possibly wait for your friends to be free to cover off all of them. When it comes to dining solo, not all venues are the right fit. Not sure where to start? We rounded up our favourite solo dining spots here

Capybara

Settle in for a Sauna or Bath House Sesh

Sauna studios and bathhouses are having a resurgence and it’s one our bodies are thankful for. Next time you’ve got a free solo day, book yourself in for a mind and body refresh. Most of these studios are chat-free zones and something people do solo so you won’t feel out of place. There are also some very cool options out there now just begging for you to while away a few hours. The Capybara Bathhouse in Surry Hills is one of our favourites. Your visit includes access to communal bathing facilities, a hot stone sauna, cold plunge, hammam and a heated lounge.

Elizabeth's Bookshop

Embark on a Bookshop Crawl

Sydney has an incredible array of bookstores that you could while away hours in. From the second-hand haven Sappho to the multi-level Dymocks store in the city, and all the gorgeous suburban independent bookstores in between, they're the kind of places best enjoyed in solitude. Next time you find yourself with a few hours to spare, consider making your way through our favourite bookstores in Sydney

Royal Botanic Garden

Pack a Solo Picnic

Pros of a solo picnic: No need to share your snacks, you can soak up the views uninterrupted and you can listen to your favourite podcast or audio book whilst you're at it. And don't forget the people watching ops. Cons? None! Solo picnics are a great chance to try something yummy from a new cafe if you're not keen on sitting in alone and to get out of the house for a change of scenery. It's also a great chance to get caught up on any reading, writing or resting. Head over here for our edit of our favourite picnic spots around town.
