North 54 Dinner Nights
By day, North 54 is all about damn good banh mi, specialty sips (like the pandan coconut cloud) and moreish cookies. But soon, they’ll be transforming into a cool little bar every Friday & Saturday night, where you’re encouraged to BYO drinks (Oxford Cellars is right across the road) and settle in for a tight edit of snacks and larger shares. It’ll be an all-new menu, but very much the same vibe you’ve come to expect from Chef Bac Pham. So in other words…delicious.
North 54 Dinner Nights kick off Friday, February 20th. Until then, we’ll just be drooling over this preview.

How could we possibly compile a list of BYO gems without mentioning Capri. Trading in the heart of Fremantle since the 50s, this Italian eatery is a local institution, with its complimentary soup and bread, authentic Italian food and warm family hospitality key to the restaurant’s enduring charm. Seven decades on and four generations later, the lively BYO restaurant remains booked and busy, with many of its original dishes still on the menu, from spaghetti alla bolognese to cottaletta and scallopini. Threecoins & Sons
For family, friends, and everyone in between. That’s the ethos that spills into everything Threecoins & Sons stand for. Come here to be comforted by elevated Italian classics and wholesome family-style service. Settle in for woodfired pinsas (Roman-style pizzas) layered with the likes of mortadella, pineapple salsa, pickled peppers and parmigiano cream, as well as lush handmade pasta. Or go straight for secondi plates like their bone-in veal cotoletta with brown butter, capers, parsley and grilled lemon or classic Three Coins meatballs. The only catch? They only welcome BYO bottles on Mondays and Tuesdays, so consider this your excuse to head out at the start of the week.

When the sushi cravings hit, Tsukaya is the answer. Specialising in Japanese cuisine with a welcome Peruvian twist, the food here is superb and the dining experience is top-notch. The menu changes with the seasons to reflect the best produce and seafood, but you can expect cold share plates of fresh sashimi, nigiri and sushi rolls. If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t worry! City Garden Chinese Restaurant
Chinatown is an obvious choice when you’re chasing somewhere BYO, but if you’re not sure which spot to hit, let it be City Garden. Located right next to popular late-night spot, Billy Lee’s, City Garden tends to be slightly quieter (so perfect for sliding in unplanned with a group), and the food is always spot on. Grab a table out in the laneway, order up and settle in. Salt and pepper squid tentacles, sizzling tofu and chilli and vinegar chicken are a few of my faves, but don’t be afraid to ask what the chef recommends. If you’re keen to kick on after dinner, stroll into Northbridge’s hidden vinyl bar, Astral Weeks, for a final sip.
