The Best Bars in Sydney For Live Music
Dr Goodes
This disco-led boogie lounge has taken Paddington by absolute storm since its opening in mid-2026. Dr Goodes is a late-night bar serving pizza and cocktails, but the number one thing on the menu: disco. Lit by red lights, absolutely decked out with disco balls and soundtracked by DJs that go late into the night – it’s precisely what the doctor ordered for Paddo.

Tucked beneath York Street, the venue unfolds across two distinct spaces: an intimate upper bar for after-work drinks and a sunken dance floor where DJs and live performances take over from 7pm. Delicious and unique cocktails paired with a fun and diverse live music offering – what more could we ask for?

The Abercrombie
If concert halls or big arena shows aren’t your thing and you prefer to boogie the night away to an electric DJ set, perhaps one of Sydney’s iconic party pubs may be your answer.
Watering holes across the city host weekly sets and gigs, so it may be worth checking out your local – you never know who may be scheduled to take the stage!
One of our favourite pubs to enjoy a cocktail with a side of tunes is The Abercrombie in Chippendale. Following from a recent facelift, this 3-storey venue has it all under one roof for a memorable night out.
Start your evening on the rooftop sipping on a margarita before heading downstairs for a meal from the full pub menu. A little later on, the venue transforms into a nightclub, where local DJs set the vibe for the night ahead.
With music bingo and rooftop parties also on the agenda, it’s not hard to see why we love this spot.

FAQs
Sydney’s live music scene ranges from intimate bars to grand theatres. Dr Goodes in Paddington and Razz Room in the Sydney CBD offer late-night DJ sets and discotheque energy, while The Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst hosts local and touring bands most nights of the week. For bigger shows, the Enmore Theatre in Newtown, Metro Theatre in the CBD, and Hordern Pavilion in Moore Park draw major national and international acts, and the Sydney Opera House in Circular Quay remains the city’s most iconic stage for concerts. Whatever the budget or vibe, there’s a venue on this list to match.
For a smaller, more personal live music experience, Phoenix Central Park in Chippendale is hard to beat, with free entry via ballot and acoustics designed specifically for the space. The Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst is another strong option, running shows across its Main Room and Gallery Bar most nights, so it suits both emerging local acts and bigger names in a smaller setting. Bars like Dr Goodes in Paddington and Razz Room in the Sydney CBD also offer a more low-key, close-up alternative to the city’s arena-scale shows, with DJs and live sets running late into the night.
Phoenix Central Park in Chippendale is Sydney’s standout option for free live music, with every performance offered via ballot rather than ticket sale. Backed by philanthropist Judith Neilson AM, the venue has hosted significant touring talent inside a purpose-built space known for its acoustics and minimalist design. Numbers are strictly limited, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the seasonal program and applying as soon as a show is announced. Beyond Phoenix Central Park, some pub venues around the city also run no-cover DJ sets and band nights on quieter weeknights, though line-ups and cover charges vary week to week.
The Enmore Theatre in Newtown holds the title of Sydney’s oldest and longest-running live theatre, and was named Best Live Music Venue in NSW at the 2023 National Live Music Awards. Its interior blends Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Moderne, and Art Deco architectural styles, making it as much a heritage landmark as a working venue. Beyond concerts, it also hosts stand-up comedy, live podcast recordings, and tribute shows. The Hordern Pavilion in Moore Park is a close second, having opened in the 1920s and celebrating a century of hosting Sydney audiences, from Frank Sinatra through to Macklemore.
The Sydney CBD has a handful of solid options for live music. Razz Room is a late-night daiquiri bar and discotheque tucked beneath York Street, with DJs and live performances from 7pm across two distinct spaces. Metro Theatre sits on the edge of Chinatown and hosts both bands and DJs, local and international, across a floor built to suit either a dancefloor crowd or a seated audience. Both venues lean toward later, higher-energy nights out rather than quiet early evening sets, so they suit a group heading out after dinner or chasing a late finish to a big night out.
