Best Pizza in Sydney: Editor’s Pick
Ember Sourdough Pizza
The quiet and leafy suburb of Forestville is hiding a woodfired gem that locals can’t stop raving about. Ember Sourdough Pizza is headed up by Brian Bao (ex-Pizza Madre) and Parag Panjwani, whose shared passion for sourdough bread led to the creation of something very special.
“We wanted to give the communities in Kuringai, Northern Beaches and Willoughby a pizza place they were proud of… and prove that they didn’t need to cross the Bridge to find good pizza,” Parag said.
The place has been a runaway hit, with people coming from all over Sydney to try a slice. The menu shifts fairly regularly in line with the venue’s seasonal focus, so you can expect to try something different every few months. Alongside classics, there’s always something interesting on offer, like the mushroom ragu with pecorino cream and roasted potato with truffled manchego. Oh, and don’t skip the tiramisu, either.

As far as dough goes, Martina’s is top tier. Martina mastermind Flavio Carnevale has perfected the art with a unique twist on Roman Pinsa dough. Gigi Pizzeria
Perhaps a slightly controversial choice, Gigi’s Pizzeria went cheese-free back in 2015 and has never looked back. While the ingredients may be a little less traditional, Gigi’s pizze are prepared in textbook Neapolitan fashion; stone roasted in a wood fired oven. The cavolo brings cauliflower puree, artichokes, pinenuts, capers, currents, garlic and parsley together for an inventive take on classic flavours, while the funghi e radicchio with Swiss brown mushrooms, garlic, dairy free blue cheese, parsley, radicchio and roasted walnuts provides a good example of the kitchens’ culinary chops (vegan friendly chops…obvs).

Yes. Al Taglio in Surry Hills specialises in Roman-style pizza al taglio and caters to gluten-free, vegan, and traditional pizza eaters within the same ever-changing, seasonal menu. Gigi Pizzeria in Newtown has been cheese-free since 2015 and prepares its pizzas in traditional Neapolitan style, with dishes like the funghi e radicchio using dairy-free blue cheese. Both venues build dietary options into the core menu rather than treating them as an afterthought, which is worth knowing if you’re dining in a group with mixed dietary needs.
Queen Margherita of Savoy in Cronulla is a strong pick for a relaxed but considered date, with a traditional Pizze Rosse and Pizze Bianche format that rewards ordering one of each to share. In the Eastern Suburbs, Martina in Rose Bay offers an elevated take on pizza with Roman pinsa dough and ingredients like saffron cream sauce and truffle paste, suited to a more special-occasion night out.
