10 Country Bakeries Worth Pressing the Breaks For
From award-winning pies to legendary vanilla slices, these are the WA bakeries you detour for, queue for and still think about days later.
There’s a particular thrill that comes with spotting a country bakery mid-drive — the hand-painted sign, a few cars pulled over and people already lined up. It’s one of these rare things where you don’t check reviews, you just trust the instinct. Because some of the best food in Western Australia is hiding in plain sight, just off the highway.
Country bakeries have long been the backbone of regional towns, serving the kind of comfort food that doesn’t chase trends or reinvent classics (because they’ve perfected them). We’re talking about those pies with real heft, pastries that shatter just right, and sweets that feel as though they’ve been made purely to reward long drives.
Read on for the bakeries worth building a trip around, or at the very least, worth pressing the brakes for.

Bread Local
A road trip to Esperance’s glimmering shores takes effort, but waking up to picture-perfect pastries at the local makes it all the more worth it. Thursday to Sunday, head 4km west of town to Bread Local’s main bakery, where you’ll see the bakers in action shaping loaves and creating all the delish treaties. Nestled beneath twinkling gum leaves, it’s the perfect place to sprawl out on the grass and soak up the serene country vibes between mouthfuls of pumpkin cheese and chive scones, mango cheesecake, jalapeno scrolls, BBQ beef mac and cheese pies and more. A crusty sourdough loaf to go is the only real non-negotiable.

Claudio Bakehouse
Claudio Bakehouse is your go-to for masterful European croissants, pain suisse, and pinsa filled fresh to order. Toodyay Bakery
Drawing hungry locals and road trippers from near and far, Toodyay Bakery remains one of WA’s best country bakeries. Let the multiple awards point you to its best bites like the gold medal-winning BBQ Beef Smoked Brisket & Jalapeño Pie, or keep it simple with a local-approved traditional vanilla slice. If you have time to sit and enjoy, the upstairs balcony is a great spot to sit and watch the idyllic small town buzz below.

Yallingup Gugelhupf
Much like its iconic sister bakery, Yallingup Woodfired Bread, this German-style bakery still feels like a well-kept secret despite being a local institution. The adorable pink and blue cottage lies just off Caves Road, within striking distance of Yallingup Beach and its crystal clear waters. Inside, the smell of freshly baked goods is the first thing to hit you, followed closely by the dizzying display of treats. Of course, you have to try its namesake: the gugelhupf (a spongey German cake). But we also highly rate the hefty sandwiches, which feel like the perfect addition to your beach bag.

Mt Barker Country Bakery
Home to Australia’s Best Pie of 2025 alongside oodles of other award-winning bites, this mighty little haven of baked perfection is a must on any road trips down to WA’s Great Southern. With pie fillings ranging from classic country flavours to wildly creative, choosing is the hard part. Award winners such as Scollop & Prawn in Cafe De Paris Butter, Spicy Korean Chicken, Gunpowder Lamb and Pepper Steak seem like a safe place to start.

Yallingup & Margaret River Woodfired Bread
Locals swear by the handcrafted biodynamic sourdough loaves coming out of this small family-run woodfired bakery. Originating in Yallingup, in a humble shack down the end of a bush track, there’s now a second outpost in Margaret River where you can pick up these holy grail breads. Both spots bake their own on site, so you’re still getting them fresh outta the oven. To make life easier, there are just five styles to choose from: a white pure wheat, wholemeal wheat and rye, pure rye and fruit loaf. Simply add butter and enjoy.
