A personal recommendation goes a long way and that’s what we love to share most at Sitchu. Sometimes, however, a restaurant recommendation isn’t enough, and you want to know what dish you simply can’t live without. With our favourite dishes of the month series, we’re keen to share the dishes that had us licking our plates, scrounging around for a last morsel and jigging about in our seats with glee. Be warned, however. These are not first-date foods. These are the kinds of dishes you want to share with a dear friend — where it doesn’t matter if you use your hands, scrape the plate or steal the last bite. 

Arab Blondie, Cafe Tanja

I recently finished reading Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. It’s a Spanish book about a woman named Tita who expresses her feelings through cooking, the results of which lead to rather magical effects on those who consume her recipes. Feasting on the iconic Arab Blondie at Moroccan restaurant Cafe Tanja is the closest I’ve ever gotten to realising how much emotion can be tasted in food. Sana’s famous bake combines almonds, vanilla, white chocolate and orange blossom in perfect proportions. It tastes like a hug, a warm blanket and a springtime garden all at once.

Sitchu Tip: Pair with a hearty slug of mint tea, obviously.

I deem a good pasta the kind that leaves me licking the plate, despite being in the presence of plenty of civilised adults. Whether it was the moodily lit restaurant, perfectly paired glass of white or the pasta itself, this meal was transformative to me. Filled with pumpkin and ricotta and doused in cream, truffle and hazelnut, the combination is electric. Don’t make like my dining companion and live in regret. Order this.

Starters will always have my heart. Served in perfect bite-sized portions, they set the tone for a meal. This delight from LouLou is one of the best I’ve had. All elements perfectly balanced.

Mushroom Bolognese, Flora

Everything Paisano and Daughters do is blessed and their light-filled vegetarian restaurant Flora is no exception. I stopped in for a huge bowl of mushroom bolognese that stopped me in my tracks. It was so rich and delicious that I had to triple-check that there was no meat in it. Ditto the incredible Flora burger.

Swordfish, Cafe Sydney

Cafe Sydney has stood the test of time, presiding over the harbour for 30 years now. I can confirm that this Sydney stalwart is still at the top of its game. One of the joys of this scenic spot lies in the fact that you can return again to taste your favourite dishes with the menu always inclusive of tried and tested favourites. The grilled swordfish is exactly that. What looks like a piece of fish atop blistered cherry tomatoes is actually a revelation in seafood form. Proof that you don’t need fancy foams and gels to create something mindblowing.
