There’s something so special about the drive from Perth to Exmouth. It’s a chance to experience the Coral Coast’s raw, untouched landscapes, laid back coastal towns, unique marine life and delicious local eats. The incredible memories you’ll make along the way? Just as priceless.

The best time for this trip is between April and September, when the temperatures are moderate and the chances of spotting marine life along the Ningaloo Reef are greater. If possible, give yourself a week to allow enough time to properly explore every stop.

Lancelin

Drive time: 1.5 hours from Perth

Just a short drive out of Perth, ease into your journey with a morning spent on Lancelin’s famous sand dunes. Grab a coffee and a mouthwatering bagel or acai bowl from Cafe 6044—it’s a laid-back spot in the heart of town. Checkout the nearby beach, have a swim or a walk along the shore.

Cervantes and the Pinnacles 

Drive time: Less than an hour from Lancelin to Cervantes

Just a short drive further brings you to Nambung National Park—home to the Pinnacles Desert, a surreal landscape of ancient limestone formations that look like something out of a sci-fi film. Take time to wander or drive the 4-kilometre loop through this stunning scenery.

Head to Lobster Shack in Cervantes for a seafood feast. Known for its fresh western rock lobster, this spot is a must-visit for an iconic WA meal by the ocean. You can even take a quick factory tour to see how the lobsters go from ocean to plate.

Jurien Bay Oceanic Experience

Drive time: Less than 20 minutes from Cervantes

Jurien Bay is a charming coastal escape, offering crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and scenic beaches for relaxing. It’s a haven for fishing enthusiasts and wildlife lovers, with the chance to spot endangered Australian Sea Lions. For adrenaline seekers, skydiving offers stunning ocean views, while fishing charters cater to all levels. Sandy Cape beckons with its pristine sands, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and sandboarding, while 4WD tracks lead to stunning coastal vistas. Explore WWII remains at North Head or enjoy vibrant wildflowers in Lesueur National Park, a true nature lover’s paradise.

Geraldton 

Drive time: 2.4 hours drive from Cervantes to Geraldton

Stop by Salt Dish, a charming local cafe in laid-back Geraldton, for a hearty breakfast or lunch, perfect for recharging before exploring. For a dose of history, visit the HMAS Sydney Memorial, or take a stroll along Geraldton’s foreshore, offering stunning views and a great photo opportunity. Culture lovers will appreciate the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery and the Museum of Geraldton, both showcasing the region’s rich heritage and vibrant artistic scene.

Kalbarri 

Drive time: 2 hours from Geraldton to Kalbarri

Continue up the coast to Kalbarri, where natural wonders and breathtaking views await at every turn. A must-see is Kalbarri National Park, home to the iconic Nature’s Window—a stunning sandstone rock formation that perfectly frames the gorge views below. For the best light and cooler temperatures, visit in the morning or late afternoon. Other fantastic hikes in the park include Z-Bend Gorge and The Loop, both offering spectacular scenery and a rewarding experience for active travellers.

After exploring the gorges, head to Finlay’s Kalbarri, a brewery and seafood restaurant where you can enjoy fresh, local seafood with sips under the stars. For a place to stay, check into Kalbarri Edge Resort, which offers spacious rooms and a pool to help you cool down after a day in the sun.

Drive time: About 3.75 hours from Kalbarri to Shark Bay

A road trip along the Coral Coast wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Shark Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its crystal-clear waters, unique wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Visit Hamelin Pool to see ancient stromatolites—some of the oldest life forms on Earth.

Just a short drive from Shark Bay is Monkey Mia, where you can interact with the area’s famous wild dolphins. Accommodation options include RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, where you can enjoy beachfront views and resort-style pools, and possibly spot a dolphin from your balcony. Enjoy a sunset dinner on the deck at Boughshed Restaurant, within the resort, known for its seasonal seafood dishes.

Coral Bay and Exmouth 

Drive time: 5.5 hours from Monkey Mia to Coral Bay, 1.5 hours from Coral Bay to Exmouth

As you near your destination, Coral Bay is a paradise not to be missed. Spend the afternoon snorkelling at Ningaloo Reef, where you can see some of the world’s most impressive, vibrant coral and a rainbow of fish. Grab a fresh bite and an excellent coffee at Fin’s Cafe to prep you for the last stretch.

When you reach Exmouth, you’re officially at one of Australia’s premier marine playgrounds. Head to Turquoise Bay for a snorkelling session—this beach is renowned for its clear waters and coral gardens.

In Exmouth, stay at Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, where luxury meets pristine coastal views. For dinner, visit Whalers Restaurant for their famous seafood platters and views over the marina.
