The Best Croissants in Melbourne (There are a Few)

This flaky pastry has to be one of life's greatest joys. Ready to find a new favourite? These are Melbourne's best croissants

Small Batch Roasting Co.

Whomever first invented the croissants has our many thanks. They really are one of life’s greatest joys. But a bad croissant? A stale croissant? Few things are worse. If you prefer not to leave your croissant-seeking to chance, take a read through our edit of the best croissants in Melbourne. Tried and tested, we guarantee these flaky sensations will satisfy.

Bread Club

Bread Club

When two Frenchmen with a dazzling pastry history decide to join forces to craft a club everyone is welcome to join…well, good things happen. Here, it is all about serene mint green interiors and laminated goodies. Our favourite? The black forest croissant is to die for.

Gordon St Bakery

Gordon St Bakery

Gordon St Bakery is the kind of place you can easily make your local. Low-key and friendly vibes await, alongside the best choc almond croissant you’ll ever taste in your life.

Zelda Bakery

You’re going to want to pop in early to have first pick of the pastries at this fully kosher bakery. With an emphasis on ethical and sustainable ingredients, you can expect top-tier bakes. Keep an eye on their socials if there is something you really want to try, otherwise, look forward to the likes of raspberry cheesecake twice-baked croissants, amongst others.

54 Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea

Croissanteria

Croissanteria

Incredibly serious about their lamination, Croissanteria, is serving up some of the best croissants in the city, complete with some insanely delicious flavour combinations right off the bat. For fans of savoury bakes, think caramelised onion, and for the sweet lovers, there’s everything from their already viral peanut raspberry twice-baked Pain Au Chocolat to hazelnut and cranberry.

They’re also open at night, serving up lobster roll croissants for those who fancy bakery treats in the PM.

Crown Melbourne, Level 1/8 Whiteman Street, Southbank

Baker Bleu

Baker Bleu

Baker Bleu‘s three Melbourne storefronts (and one in Syd!) are a testament to the community’s love of their ethical breads and delicate viennoiserie. The croissants here are naturally leavened with sourdough starter, leaving a crispy dark crust and soft, layered middle. Prepare for plenty of crumbs.

Publique Bakery

The only thing traditional about Publique Bakery is their exceptional knowledge of the viennoiserie craft. Everything else is inventive and fresh. They are always playing with flavours so expect fun twists on each visit. Our personal favourite? The cute-as-a-button ribbon croissant.

Small Batch Roasting Co.

Small Batch Roasting Co.

A specialty coffee shop with its own team of bakers, Small Batch Roasting Co. is essentially our idea of heaven. Step in-store and expect wafts of toasted coffee beans complemented by notes of golden, baked goods. Their Reuben croissant is a fan favourite, but it’s the wattleseed pain au chocolat that has our hearts.

3-9 Little Howard Street, North Melbourne

Amann

Amann

Wander past this gloriously chic patisserie and, crowds aside, you’ll find a window stacked with baked treats. Amann loves to experiment so expect to find some fun iterations alongside the classics. We’re talking monkey loaf style croissant, topped with black sesame praline, candied yuzu, and crème patisserie.

645 Nicholson Street, Carlton North

Back Alley Bakes

Back Alley Bakes

Spearheaded by husband and wife duo, Gabs and Alana, Back Alley Bakes credits their tasty creations to the exceptionally high-quality ingredients they source. Be sure to arrive hungry as you’ll need to sample a plain croissant, alongside one of their cult status croi-sausos. For the uninitiated, that’s a delicious concoction of pork and fennel seeds, wrapped in croissant pastry and topped with housemade kasuni relish.

Sitchu Tip: Be sure to grab a loaf of their biodynamically grown sourdough loaves on your way out!

OCAB

OCAB

Once you get over the impeccable acronym that is OCAB (Overly Confident Arrogant Bakers, FYI), take a minute to appreciate their exquisite bakes. Owners Hooman and Tristan have perfected their croissants with previous careers in engineering and pastry, respectively, and offer the plain variety alongside a rotating selection of monthly specials. Think cheesymite, lemon meringue and pistachio amongst others.

28A Shutter Street, Moonee Ponds

Blanc Bakery

Blanc Bakery

This minimalist gem is a local favourite, open 7 days a week until sold out (and sell out they do). We recommend swinging by Blanc Bakery early if you want first dibs on their handcrafted croissants.

14 Adams Lane, Berwick

To Be Frank

To Be Frank

The only thing we love more than a bakery is one that functions as a community hub. To Be Frank is all about affordable and nutritional daily bread and, of course, pastry layered to perfection. Their salami and goat cheese croissant is an icon. Don’t miss it.
