Fair, here’s a version that opens with more personality:

Winter in Sydney basically means one thing, chasing down the city’s best pies, and this year’s list has some serious contenders. Bourke Street Bakery’s vegan curry vege pie is proof that plant-based doesn’t mean flavour-based compromise, Black Star Pastry’s smoked beef and cheese is exactly the indulgent hit you’d expect from them, and Lode Pies has turned pastry into a genuine art form with a three-day pithivier across its Surry Hills and Circular Quay spots. Navigating the abundance of specialty pies now on the market isn’t as simple as it once was, but not to worry, A.P Bakery’s smoked brisket and Tokyo Lamington’s Japanese-style chicken curry pie round out the list, and we’ve toured the city and its suburbs to find out which pies are worth queuing for.

From vegan curry vege to cheese-topped crusts, these are Sydney’s best pies and where to get them.

Lode Pies

Lode Pies truly are masters of their craft. Their Instagram is a sight to behold with lamination and layers creating a visual feast. But for the best feast of all, you’ll have to get your hands on one of their pies.

This pithivier was born as a degustation dish at hatted restaurant LuMi Dining, made by chefs Federico Zanellato and Lorenzo Librino. It became so popular, especially during lockdown pastry pop-ups when demand went through the roof, that the pair decided to build an entire standalone bakery around it. Lode Pies now spans multiple locations around Sydney, but the pithivier remains the star (and for good reason).

Sitchu Tip: It’s on the pricier end, but worth every cent. It takes three days to make and features an incredible “chimney” through which chicken sauce can be poured. Filled with free-range pork and shiitake mushrooms, it’s a flavour bomb if ever we’ve had one.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sydney’s Best Pies

Bourke Street Bakery’s vegan vege curry pie is a standout for plant-based eaters, delivering the same pastry quality the bakery is known for across its Sydney locations. The filling leans on a well-spiced curry base rather than a meat substitute, which keeps it satisfying without feeling like a compromise. It’s a solid pick for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone simply keen to try something different from the usual beef or chicken pie.

Tokyo Lamington in Newtown puts a Japanese twist on the classic pie format with its chicken curry pie, topped with panko crumbs for extra crunch. It’s a good option for fans of katsu curry looking for a portable, pastry-wrapped version. The Newtown store is also known for its lamingtons, so it doubles as a dessert stop.

Lode Pies’ pithivier, available in Surry Hills and Circular Quay, sits at the top end of Sydney’s pie scene. It takes three days to make and features free-range pork and shiitake mushroom filling poured through a signature pastry chimney. It’s a bigger spend than a standard bakery pie, but suited to those after something genuinely craft-driven.

Nonna Tina’s specialises in Italian pies, with flavours including Bolognese, chicken boscaiola, and chicken parmigiana. The brand has picked up multiple wins at Australia’s Best Pie Competition. It doesn’t have a permanent shopfront, so the easiest way to try one is at Bondi Markets or via a bulk online order.

Bourke Street Bakery, with locations across Sydney, is one of the most consistent names in the city’s pie scene thanks to a pastry recipe the bakery has refined over years of operation. Its reliability across multiple sites makes it a dependable pick regardless of which suburb you’re in, alongside standout options like A.P Bakery’s smoked brisket pie.
