Run, Don’t Walk: These Are Canberra’s Top Matcha Spots

The matcha movement has officially taken hold in Canberra, with cafés across the city serving up perfectly whisked green tea in all its vibrant glory. Whether you like your matcha poured over ice, blended with oat milk, or served the traditional way, there’s no shortage of spots to get your fix. In fact, it feels like there’s a new one popping up almost weekly!

From minimalist hideaways to full-blown matcha houses, here’s where to find the best matcha in the capital.

nichi Kingston

Tucked into Kingston’s leafy streets, nichi is a serene space where matcha feels like a ritual rather than a caffeine fix. Their minimalist interiors and attention to detail make everything feel intentional, serving matcha with a creamy, balanced flavour that appeals to both purists and newcomers. This is the perfect spot for a quiet pause and a perfectly whisked green tea.

Ujin Matcha House

Ujin has officially opened as Canberra’s first dedicated matcha house! Offering ceremonial-grade matcha sourced directly from Japan’s famed Uji region, every cup is whisked to order using traditional tools. Customers can choose from at four different matcha blends, with a rotating selection designed to showcase the diversity of the practice and cultivation. The cafe also offers a range of matcha-inspired treats as well, including soft serves and cheesecakes. Housed inside a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, Ujin feels like a physical embodiment of the true art of matcha.

Teddy’s Matcha

This pop-up matcha offering has been dreamt up by local Canberra couple Austine and Tom. Having fallen in love with matcha-making after attending a tea ceremony in Kyoto, Japan, the pair decided to bring their learnings back to the capital.

Championing the traditional flavours that are designed to elevate rather than overpower the matcha power, they’re known for creations like salted maple, brown sugar cinnamon and earl grey.
