Hays St Bar & Kitchen

Since opening in 2023, Hays St Bar & Kitchen has brought a European sensibility to Goolwa’s dining scene. The intimate space pairs exposed brick and warm finishes with a seasonal menu that might move from Goolwa pipis in garlic butter to braised lamb shoulder with yoghurt hummus. It’s relaxed, polished and well worth settling in for.

Motherduck

Inside Goolwa’s historic Wharf Precinct, The Fleurieu Distillery occupies the former Railway Goods Shed, built in 1879. The award-winning distillery produces single malt whisky and gin, with the river providing an atmospheric backdrop for a tasting. Come for the spirits, stay for the setting.

For a slower introduction to the Lower Murray, climb aboard the PS Oscar W for an evening cruise aboard an authentic wood-fired paddle steamer. Bring a few provisions, pick up a bottle from The Wharf Wine Bar beforehand and settle in as the river slips by.

South Australian Wooden Boat Festival

Every second year, Goolwa’s historic wharf becomes a celebration of timber, craftsmanship and the town’s deep connection to the water. Running since 1989, the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival is Australia’s oldest wooden boat festival, with paddle steamers, putt putts and beautifully restored vessels filling the river for a weekend of races, parades and boatbuilding challenges. Fireworks over the Hindmarsh Island Bridge round things out after dark.

The Cockle Train

One of Goolwa’s most enduring experiences, The Cockle Train follows Australia’s oldest steel-railed railway, dating back to 1854. From Goolwa, the heritage service travels through Middleton and Port Elliot before arriving in Victor Harbor, with coastal scenery unfolding along the way. The journey takes around 30 minutes each way.
