In partnership with The Henry Jones Art Hotel, we uncover Hobart’s most artful winter escape.

Hobart comes alive in winter’s darkness; the city’s creative pulse surges as the temperature dips low. It’s a season made for cultural immersion — and the perfect moment for a brush with winter.

There’s no finer base of discovery for Hobart’s cultural heart than The Henry Jones Art Hotel, Australia’s first dedicated art hotel. Set within Hobart’s historic IXL Jam Factory, this boutique stay honours the building’s industrial heritage, while blending it seamlessly with modern contemporary design. Home to more than 400 works by both established and emerging Tasmanian artists, the hotel invites creativity at every turn, with artworks displayed throughout the building — from the iconic IXL Long Bar and Landscape restaurant to guest suites and the formal gallery spaces.

Once a hub of industry, Hunter Street is now a lively waterfront precinct perfect for dining, entertainment and luxury stays. Whether you’re in town for a romantic weekend, girls’ getaway or the steady stream of events that have cemented Hobart’s reputation as the country’s cultural capital, winter is when it shines brightest. Dark Mofo (June 11-22) brings a city-wide revelry in red light and provocative art, Festival of Voices (3-12 July) celebrates song from cabaret to classical, and Beaker Street Festival (6-17 August) merges science with arts, performance and storytelling.

If you’re coming to Hobart for the culture, why simply visit a gallery when you can stay in one? With a three-night Harbour View Spa Room package, guests are invited to immerse themselves fully in the city’s creative heartbeat.

Here’s your curated guide to spending 48 perfect hours in the city, starting at The Henry Jones Art Hotel.

Day 1: Immerse Yourself in Hobart’s Creative Pulse

Wake in the Harbour View Spa Room to an enviable vista across the harbour, Hobart city and Kunanyi/Mount Wellington — you may even spot its summit lightly dusted with snow in the cooler months. Each room pairs heritage charm with contemporary comforts: think original hand-cut stone walls and exposed timber trusses. The star of the suite is the ultra-luxurious Kohler elliptical spa, designed for ultimate relaxation.

Mornings begin at Jam Packed, the charming on-site atrium café. The signature Full Breakfast sets the tone: select a starter, perhaps a fresh Pigeon Whole Bakers croissant, corn fritters with chilli jam, or a poke bowl topped off with a barista-made coffee or juice.

Mona (Image Credit: Tourism Tasmania)

At Brooke Street Pier, board the Mona Roma ferry bound for Hobart’s other iconic cultural landmark, Mona (Museum of Old and New Art). As Mona emerges into view, it’s strikingly clear that this museum is unlike any other. These subterranean warrens are a cacophony of bold, strange, beautiful and unexpected art. The newly opened Elektra wing by Anselm Kiefer is an entire sculptural amphitheatre begging exploration.

Stop by Mona’s Void Bar, one of Hobart’s finest cocktail spots, and Faro restaurant guarantees an utterly unique lunch, complete with live performance, unusual tableware and an imposing orb by James Turrell (which you should absolutely enter for a post-lunch light show) before making your way back to Hobart on the ferry.

After a day immersed in art, it’s time to imbibe it. At the iconic IXL Long Bar, you’ll enjoy ‘Art Collection Cocktails’ as part of your stay. These aren’t your everyday cocktails; they’re sensory creations featuring vapour bubbles, foams and edible art, finished with moments of tableside theatre.

For dinner, a true taste of Tasmania awaits at Landscape. Inspired by the art of John Glover, the restaurant draws on renowned local produce from the land and sea. Landscape’s kitchen centrepiece is the Asado grill, fired with sherry, bourbon or port casks to deliver a distinct and delicious element of char and smoke. Think smoked beef tartare, char-grilled Stanley octopus with potato foam and herb butter, and a luxury “Surf and Turf” with southern rock lobster.

For a post-dinner drink with a difference, Evolve Spirits Bar at MACq 01 is possibly the world’s only lounge with both premium spirits and an impressive collection of 550-million-year-old fossils.

Day 2: Explore Hobart’s Cultural Playground

Grab a coffee and croissant to-go from Jam Packed Café before heading out for a self-guided architectural walking tour of Hobart, or wander the Botanical Gardens for a moment of history and natural beauty amidst the fresh air. Return at 12pm, for the Sticky Stones and Secrets Storytelling Tour to uncover the hidden tales of the Hunter Street buildings, including surprising stories behind the IXL Jam Factory itself. Then take a tour of a different kind with a tasting at Lark Distillery’s plush, newly renovated cellar door. It’s the most delicious way to absorb the history of Tasmanian whisky.

When it comes to art, you’re spoilt for choice with Hobart galleries. Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is an easy stroll from the Henry Jones. Salamanca Arts Centre hosts an ever-shifting collection of exhibitions (and Rosie In My Midnight Dreams is your nearby wine-bar-café go-to for lunch). Art Mob champions First Nations artists, Bett Gallery offers contemporary pieces for purchase, while Penny Contemporary holds a tight curation of intriguing local and global artists. Plimsoll Gallery favours innovative art, and even the library hosts exhibitions.

Encounter art at your home base as a knowledgeable guide for The Henry Jones Art Tour, held daily at 4pm. Sip sparkling as you wander past the artworks lining the hotel’s corridors, where emerging local artists are displayed alongside historic paintings by John Glover, widely regarded as the father of Australian landscape art. The collection also includes winning pieces from the Glover Prize — Australia’s most prestigious landscape painting prize — as well as winning artworks from the Henry Jones Art Prize for emerging talent.

You can’t explore the richness of Hobart without appreciating its culinary culture. Slip into Japanese-influenced 10-seater Scholé for a wine bar take on Tasmanian seasonality, or enjoy nine leisurely courses at mod-Italian institution Fico (the casual sister bar, Pitzi, is around the corner). Start with cocktails at Rude Boy and hop over to hip hole-in-the-wall Sonny for vinyl tunes and small plates. Lucinda Wine Bar serves cave à manger-style dishes by candlelight, paired with idiosyncratic wines, or you might splash out on Dier Makr, the elevated degustation sibling.

Enjoy a little night music? Catch live acts, DJs and dance parties across In The Hanging Garden’s venues, songs and sessions at the New Sydney Hotel, jazz at Pablo’s Cocktails and Dreams. On Fridays, head to Salamanca Arts Centre’s Courtyard for music and mulled wine. If there’s no festival, you’ll still find world-class performances at the Theatre Royal. Stay out late to take it in. After all, you have a complimentary late checkout.

Depart with your keepsakes: a Henry Jones Art Hotel jam, and a soul enriched from your brush with art.

Winter is a vibrant time to visit The Henry Jones Art Hotel during Dark Mofo. Discover 42 Degrees South: Shanghai Contemporary Art Observatory, a dynamic exhibition featuring six contemporary artists from Shanghai showcasing photography, painting, drawing, and video.
