Preston Suburb Profile

Preston is an ever-evolving suburb that has been sitting quietly on the sidelines of some of Melbourne’s most vibrant and artistic neighbourhoods. But there is a change in the air, as Preston’s emerging bar and dining scene is getting noticed. Its amiable streets are lined with a mix of charming California bungalows and modern townhouse developments, all of which add to the village-like ambience of this easy-going northside suburb.

Living in Preston
The Locals

An up-and-coming northside gem, Preston gives locals the best of both worlds. It’s just nine kilometres from the CBD and close to Brunswick, Northcote, Collingwood, and Fitzroy. This kind of accessibility is why young professionals and couples are moving into the area in droves – they have their pick of an eclectic mix of dining, drinking, and live performance venues. The lifestyle is laid-back and upbeat, and the mix of families, singles, and couples can be seen at weekends strolling along Darebin Creek or at the famous Preston Market. Living in Burwood offers a similar blend of community and convenience, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxed yet vibrant lifestyle. Resident foodies take advantage of Preston’s multiculturalism, offering a colourful assortment of cheap and cheerful bites that keep the students and busy professionals well fed.

Preston has an endearing community spirit, with residents supporting local businesses whenever they can. There are numerous primary and secondary schools to choose from, and an abundance of playing fields (Preston Lions Football Club, Preston Cricket Club, West Preston Lakeside Football Club and Ruthven Reserve) encourage locals to get outside and stay active. For those who prefer to get their steps in shopping, the Northland Shopping Centre can be found on Murray Road. Students and city workers have an easy commute with the Mernda train offering direct lines to the city. For neighbouring suburbs, the bus and tram will get you where you need to go as well. Living in Burwood offers great public transport links too, making it a fantastic option for commuters.

Area Features

Preston Market

Spanning over 6000sqm, the Preston Market is the second largest in Melbourne. A foodie and lifestyle haven, you’ll find a treasure trove of fresh produce, supermarkets, and variety stores. Grab a coffee on your way in and explore the endless shopfronts selling everything from poultry to rugs.

Darebin Creek

Come Saturday, locals head to Darebin Creek for some fresh air and greener pastures. A favourite of Preston’s four-legged friends, the Darebin Creek Trail is suitable for cyclists, runners and strollers.

Wine & Dine

The area’s diversity is played out on the plates of Preston’s dining scene from esteemed eateries to non-descript holes-in-the-walls. Where the wine (and beer) is concerned, you’ll find everything from local craft breweries to intimate after-hours haunts in this lively suburb.

Preston is a melting pot of people from different places and all stages of life, all of which bring a sense of community and vibrancy to the area. While there are plenty of retirees who have called the suburb home for decades, in recent years, more young professionals, couples and families have moved in. A strong student population resides in Preston that is drawn the affordable rent and proximity to Melbourne’s inner-city campuses.
