Melbourne Has Beaten Sydney at Almost Everything That Matters, According to a New Index
Coffee, dining, dating and live events helped Melbourne claim the crown, although Sydney still has a few enviable wins of its own.
The coffee argument is over, apparently.
A new data-led study has named Melbourne Australia’s best city, placing it ahead of Sydney across coffee, dining, dating, hotels and live events. The Holafly Rivalry Index 2026 compared the two cities across eight pillars of urban life and handed Melbourne an overall score of 94.3, with Sydney following at a still very respectable 89.6.
Sydney, before you begin drafting the rebuttal, you did win nightlife, outdoor spaces and fitness. Your beaches remain offensively attractive, your coastal walks are magnificent and, according to the index, your licensed venues stay open an hour later on average. We will concede those points gracefully, preferably over a flat white.
Melbourne’s coffee win will surprise precisely nobody. The city received full marks for cafe density and industry recognition, with Fitzroy recording the country’s highest concentration of internationally recognised specialty roasters per square kilometre. Brunswick Street and Smith Street also clocked an average Google rating of 4.62, which is a very official way of confirming that wandering the inner north without a breakfast plan remains a sound strategy.
More unexpectedly, Melbourne took out the dating category. The index credits our larger single population, greater concentration of active dating-app users and stronger calendar of in-person singles events. This does not guarantee that anyone will reply to your message, but statistically, the possibilities are apparently excellent.
Our dining and hotel scenes came out ahead too. Melbourne recorded 412 hotels to Sydney’s 394, alongside slightly stronger average guest ratings, while Queen Victoria Market and South Melbourne Market helped push the city’s food credentials over the line. Major concerts, the Australian Open, Formula 1, the Boxing Day Test and a full AFL season secured the live-events crown.
At suburb level, Melbourne CBD ranked first locally, Fitzroy took the coffee title and South Melbourne placed third overall. Sydney had its own strong showing, with Surry Hills leading for coffee and dining, and Manly earning a perfect outdoor-space score.
Of course, the research was produced by global eSIM company Holafly, so this is not a legally binding end to Australia’s favourite civic argument. Still, Melbourne may not have Sydney Harbour, but we apparently have stronger coffee, better statistical odds of a date and somewhere excellent to discuss both afterwards.
