A Sweet Tooth’s Guide to the Best Pastries in Melbourne

Soft, flaky, and perfectly golden, these are the best pastries in Melbourne guaranteed to keep the sugar cravings at bay.

Penny For Pound, Camberwell

One of the best feelings in the world is scoring yourself a piping hot pastry straight from the oven. The bag becomes translucent from the butter as the sweet smell of perfection hits your nose.

Melbourne is a city steeped in pastry privilege and we’ve taken on the mighty task of finding the flakiest and sugariest around.

From picture-perfect patisseries to humble neighbourhood bakeries, here’s where you’ll find the best pastries in Melbourne.

Core Roasters

Core Roasters

A new classic has landed on Barkly Street in Brunswick East. Think small warehouse vibes and minimal signage, where you head in beyond a roller door and forest green exteriors to a long coffee bar with an attached pastry kitchen.

Core Roasters is so much more than your standard coffee and croissant place though, as alongside classic almond croissants you'll find delectable pastries filled with mushroom rendang and a plum tarte tartin.

14 Barkly Street, Brunswick East

Penny For Pound

Penny For Pound

These are some of our favourite pastries in Melbourne. Much loved bakery Penny for Pound has a storefront on Bridge Road in Richmond, as well as two other locations around Melbourne, all with an expanded offering of freshly baked sweet and savoury goods for you to savour.

Freshly baked croissants, cruffins and glistening fruit danishes piled high await. If you're a fan of the classics, you can't go wrong with their plain buttery croissant or raspberry-almond croissant, while others who thrive on unique spins can indulge in a twice-baked red velvet croissant, or blueberry cheesecake variety.

Pastries rotate monthly too, which means you need to come back regularly for that delicious, flaky fix.

Richmond, Camberwell & Moorabbin

Calle

Calle

Roll into Rathdowne Street for a taste of Calle's exceptional croissant wheels. A cult-favourite item at this Carlton bakery, spirals of glossy pastry are wrapped around oozy fillings ranging from black sesame and chocolate to Biscoff and pistachio.

Flavours change every month, and other pastries on offer might include almond croissants, chocolate-filled Pain Suisse, escargots, and fruit Danishes. No regrets, just some of the best pastries in Melbourne, every time.

Drom Bakery

Drom Bakery

For all your dough-filled dreams, head to Drom Bakery. The talented bakers here marry innovation with time-tested techniques and classic flavours to bring you some of the most dazzling pastries imaginable, alongside artisan bread and mouthwatering sandwiches.

The Flour House

The Flour House

This is the Highett bakery locals would rather have kept secret...and for good reason; The Flour House is not like any other bakery.

Here, they mill their grain, sourced from local Victorian farms, to provide the best quality and most nutritious artisanal bread and pastries possible.

Their rhubarb Danish and Black Forest pastry, made with housemade Kirsch cream and pain au chocolat are just some of the delectable highlights and some of the best pastries in Melbourne.

3 Graham Road, Highett

Bread Club

Bread Club

All you need is a love of carbs to join this particular club, where the rewards are awe-inspiring breads, pastries, and pies.

The two Frenchmen behind the venture have worked at Vue de Monde, Woodfrog Bakery, Tivoli Road Bakery and Baker D. Chirico.

Classic sourdough and baguettes are a given, while creative turns in the pastry department (what we're all here for) result in delights like banana split and iced Vovo croissants and toffee custard doughnuts.

Park yourself in Bread Club’s mint-green space and savour a sweet moment or three; these are easily some of the finest pastries in Melbourne.

Pronto by Via Porta

Via Porta & Pronto by Via Porta

Via Porta is both a family-run empire and a must-try for coffee and croissants, with three outposts found in Mont Albert (the OG), Hawthorn and Kew. Their almond croissants? To die for.

The pastry offerings in general have been a major drawcard for the cafe and bakery since opening days, with the croissants in particular considered some of the best in Melbourne's south-east.

So cult-followingly good that they’re now also stocked at several top cafes scattered around Melbourne!

Glorious pastries and coffee await at Brunswick's beloved Wild Life Bakery. Here, a love for sourdough, seasonal produce and community is alive and well.

Those serious about their bread will find haven at Wild Life, where they make 24-hour-fermented sourdough and experimental breads alongside some of the best pastries in Melbourne.

The onsite viennoiserie team work with an unwavering focus and attention to detail to bring you simple, sincere renditions of French classics.

These pastries are best eaten fresh, and as soon as you can get your hands on them. Take a seat inside the wide, minimalist café they've set up inside a former mechanic's shop and watch their bakers at work.

Lune Croissanterie

Lune Croissanterie

Lune needs no introduction, it’s Lune after all; the home of the best croissant in the world.

Owner Kate Reid reverse-engineered the croissants from Paris that she was obsessing over to come up with her own.

Acquiring a Lune croissant requires commitment; lines are often long and they always sell out - to be expected for some of the best pastries in Melbourne. There are eleven different flavours to choose from, but the classic is still our favourite.

Tarts Anon

Tarts Anon

Home is where the tart is. This cult Instagram bakery (born in lockdown) recently opened its second bricks-and-mortar store in Collingwood and is more popular than ever - for good reason`!

Serving up a slice of the sweet life, their retail shops serve slices and coffee until sold out, or you might fancy pre-ordering a half or whole tart online.

The choc-caramel is the cult favourite on the menu, but the signature pear, lemon-rhubarb and cherry-almond versions are also to die for.

Cremorne & Collingwood

Monforte Viennoiserie

Monforte Viennoiserie

If there is one thing that needs to be fresh – it's pastries. Flaky on the outside and soft buttery goodness on the inside, a great pastry can brighten even the sombrest of moods.

If you need a sugar fix, Monforte Viennoiserie has you covered with their rotating assortment of sweet, melt in your mouth bites.

Choosing only local organic ingredients like butter from Bellarine Peninsula's LardAss, flavour explosions like their honey, sea salt and chocolatine croissants are born.

Gordon St Bakery

If you’ve got a penchant for pastries, then Gordon St Bakery is sure to win you over. This illustrious Westside patisserie has something for both the savoury and sweet inclined, with everything from cheese twists and crusty loaves to buttery golden croissants and pains aux raisins.

Bakemono Bakers (Image credit: What's On Melbourne)

Bakemono Bakers

We're big fans of the pastries flying out the door at Bakemono Bakers. This Japanese-inspired bakery sits pretty inside a converted garage on Drewery Lane, and they've got an impeccable, tightly curated pastry selection for you to spend agonising minutes mulling over.

Think puffy Danishes filled with blueberries and custard or Nutella and strawberry, and then for something savoury, a classic ham and cheese croissant. It's one of the cutest spots for sourcing some of the best pastries in Melbourne.

Sitchu tip: Grab one of their soul-warming chai lattes on top of your selection of pastries. They brew it in-house once a week and it's delicious.

273 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

Candied Bakery

Candied Bakery

Armed with an impressive repertoire of fresh baked goods, this Westside neighbourhood bakery is also renowned for its scrumptious array of in-house-made pastries.

While savoury bites are available, peeling your eyes away from the likes of cream cheese and custard, pistachio cream and peaches and cream pastries is a mighty task.

81A Hudsons Road, Spotswood

Agathe

Agathé Pâtisserie

Agathé Pâtisserie has earned itself a near cult-like following. No trip to the South Melbourne Market is complete without stopping by Agathé’s little stand to get your hands on a chocolate croissant (or three.)

Demand is high for some of the best pastries in Melbourne and stock is always limited, so get in early. Better yet, order online to avoid disappointment.

Rustica

Rustica

With several shop fronts around Melbourne, we sleep easy knowing that a Rustica Sourdough isn’t too far away.

Half bakery, half café, Rustica is responsible for some of the best sandwiches we’ve ever tasted.

There’s no doubt that the bread at Rustica is the star of the show (the olive with fresh basil is our favourite) but they also do one of the best pastries in Melbourne – the offering changes daily.

Multiple locations across Melbourne

Baker D Chirico. Image credit: Architecture AU

Baker D Chirico

It’s with good reason that people flock to Baker D Chirico for their desserts. Their two venues around inner Melbourne supply discerning carb-lovers and restaurants alike.

While many go for the loaves of fresh, crusty bread, we also highly recommend, nay, we insist you grab a buttery golden pastry while you’re there.

Carlton, St Kilda, and South Yarra

Brunetti

Brunetti

A venue that needs no introduction, Brunetti has been the first point of call for Italian cakes, desserts, and pastries in Melbourne for 30 years.

Identical to what you’d find in the traditional Pasticcerias of Rome, Brunetti’s creamy cornetti is without a doubt one of the best around.

For the ultimate decadence, the Millefoglie with crispy layered puff pastry and Italian custard dusted with snow sugar is the winner, hands down.

Carlton, Moonee Ponds & Melbourne CBD

Moon Cruller

Moon Cruller

If it's sweet, doughy, and deep-fried, you better believe we're lining up to try it.

Like a donut but sexier, Moon Cruller’s crispy rings of pastry perfection come in flavours like cinnamon sugar, vanilla, cappuccino, pineapple, passionfruit, and raspberry.

As for the weekly wildcards, you'll have to wait and see, but with the Lune team behind it, you know they'll be good.

50 Rose Street, Fitzroy

To Be Frank

To Be Frank

To Be Frank’s Franco Villalva has worked as a pastry chef in Argentina, Spain and France, and this international experience shows in the aromatic treats that beckon from his bakery café in Collingwood.
