Journey Beyond’s New Ultra-Luxe Suites Are a Masterclass in Slow Travel
There’s a new way to think about rail travel — and it has less to do with getting somewhere, and more to do with how the journey holds you in between.
Journey Beyond has unveiled its newest level of accommodation: the Aurora and Australis Suites. Arriving from April 2026, they’ll roll out across some of Australia’s most iconic train journeys, bringing a more considered kind of travel to the rails.
The suites feature on The Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern — routes that stretch between Adelaide and Darwin, Sydney and Perth, and Brisbane and Adelaide, moving through some of the country’s most expansive landscapes.
What’s changed isn’t the scenery, but the way it’s experienced. The new suites feel closer to compact private spaces than traditional train cabins. The Australis Suite, the larger of the two, spans roughly three times the size of a Platinum cabin, with a separate bedroom, lounge area and an ensuite built for slowing down rather than rushing through. The Aurora Suite follows the same thinking, just on a smaller scale, with twice the space of existing cabins and a clearer sense of separation between sleeping and living.

Design has been led by Woods Bagot, who has taken Art Deco references and softened them into something more distinctly local. There’s timber, stone, and curved detailing throughout, along with muted finishes that echo the landscapes outside. You’ll also see touches that nod to Australia’s pastoral history — sheepskin textures, saddle leather, small material cues that feel grounded rather than decorative.
Service is unhurried. A dedicated butler takes care of unpacking, in-suite dining, and personal requests, while smaller details — a pillow menu, curated bar, quality linens — appear quietly as the journey unfolds.
Champagne is part of the rhythm, too. Guests will be served Champagne Bollinger La Grande Année 2015 alongside Australian wines, best enjoyed as the landscape shifts outside in slow motion.
Off the train, the experience extends into place. On northbound journeys aboard The Ghan, that might mean a helicopter flight over Nitmiluk National Park’s 13 gorges, before landing for a private Champagne moment in the outback.
With fares starting from $7,990 per person for Aurora and $11,890 for Australis (based on a three-day journey on The Ghan), it’s firmly in bucket-list territory, but that’s precisely the point.
This feels like part of a wider reset in how we travel: slower, more present, and a little more aware of the journey itself.
