Where to Find the Best Burgers in Canberra

Wondering where you can get your hands on the most delicious burgs in the bush capital? We’ve rounded up the best burgers in Canberra.

Grease Monkey

Canberra's foodie scene is growing fast with sensational restaurants, cafes and some damn good burger joints popping up across the city. Whether you’re a fan of traditional American-style burgs or prefer a more novel take (think bao buns and salmon steaks), Canberra’s absolutely got you covered.

To ensure your burger experience in the national capital is nothing less than stellar, here are our picks for the best burgers in Canberra.

Brodburger

Brodburger

We’re kicking off this list with a Canberra icon, and one of the city’s most beloved burger spots: the inimitable Brodburger. The burgers here taste really fresh, and the menu is incredibly varied: you can get classic meat patties, chicken, lamb, salmon, multiple veg options and even hot dogs.

With locations across Canberra, it’s easy for almost anyone in the city to get their hands on one of Brod’s burgs. But our pick of the bunch has to be the Fyshwick venue, which is located inside Capital Brewing – letting you enjoy two of Canberra’s best food and drink offerings at once.

Grease Monkey

Grease Monkey

Situated in the heart of Braddon, no visit to Canberra’s hippest suburb would be complete without a burger from Grease Monkey. This eatery is a Braddon institution and is always packed with people enjoying its stellar burgers, Detroit-style pizza, excellent drinks and fun vibe.

Our favourites from the burger menu include the Dirty Bird with southern fried chicken; the Nimbin with crumbed portobello mushroom; and the Full Service, which has controversial burger toppings like beetroot and pineapple. (Trust us, though – it’s good.) Make sure to order some Greasy’s Loaded Fries on the side.

Little Theo's

Little Theo's

This joint is known for its incredible pizza but we'll let you in on a little tip - their burgers are equally delicious. These guys smash their burgs the traditional way to keep their iconic patties extra juicy. What really seals the deal at Little Theo's, though, is their dedication to house made goodies - from their hand crumbed schnitzel to their flavoursome sauces. Vego? You won't be missing out. The halloumi burger is packed with homemade pesto, smashed avo, Portuguese chilli pesto and plenty more.

Baby Su

Baby Su

If you’re after something a little less traditional, give Baby Su a go (or its big sister restaurant, Lazy Su). Here, conventional burgers are replaced with bao-gers – which, as you may have guessed, substitute traditional buns with bao.

Inside a pillowy bao bun you can enjoy fillings like Korean spicy chicken, fried chicken, braised pork belly and panko-crumbed tofu, with a serve of the eatery’s famed waffle fries on the side. While there’s plenty of indulgence to be had from a single burger, Lazy Su’s wagyu cheesesteak spring rolls with teriyaki mayo are also worth trying.

Mookie Burger

Mookie Burger

Another spot that does burgers a little differently is Mookie Burger in Tuggeranong. The menu includes American-style favourites like cheeseburgers, fried chicken burgers and hot wings, but each item has a Japanese twist. Ingredients like Kewpie mayo, pork belly and Asian slaw feature heavily, alongside dishes such as gyoza and spring rolls. You can also get a variety of concretes – AKA frozen custard – to finish.

The star, though, is the nori rice bun, which encases a few burger options on Mookie’s menu. Made with perfectly seasoned sushi rice and a hint of seaweed, it’s a unique take on the traditional burger and, most importantly, tastes really good.

Betty's Burgers

Betty's Burgers

This Noosa favourite has brought indulgent diner-style brioche burgers to people all over Oz and its popularity is spreading for a reason - the burgers are incredible. Its claim to fame is Betty’s Classic, based on the simple American-style cheeseburger. Whilst simple, it is anything but boring. This nostalgic yet cruisey take on fast food has won the hearts and stomachs of burger-lovers nationwide. You can't call yourself a burger fan if you haven't popped by Betty's.

Shop FG08, 148 Bunda Street, Canberra

BZ Burger

BZ Burger

If you’re a die-hard burger traditionalist, get yourself to BZ Burger. The menu is filled with classics like cheeseburgers, mack burgers (their take on everyone’s favourite fast food chain) and fried chicken burgers, plus brisket, epic fries and potato gems. Everything is pretty indulgent, but when you’ve got a big appetite, this is where you need to be.

And if a massive burger isn’t quite enough, we absolutely recommend ordering heaps of sides from BZ Burger’s big menu. The loaded fries are great – particularly the Canadian Poutine Fries with cheese curds and gravy – as are the thickshakes. The salted jersey caramel flavour is our number-one pick.
