Where NYC meets Canberra, Al's Deli and Diner is a slice of Manhattan magic in this tiny diner in the city centre. 

The diner is buzzing 7 days a week, slinging artisan coffee, breakfast plates and freshly baked goods to locals and tourists who regularly flock to the funky space.

The sandwiches are the real show-stopper, though. We love the fresh chicken salad sando, with shredded chicken breast, kewpie mayo and celery. For the extra-chilly mornings, the toasties are hard to resist, with fillings like ham, provolone, mushroom and sugo making our mouths water.

With a name like Sandoochie, you know these guys take their sandos seriously. This hot spot keeps regulars returning for more, with an ever-changing menu of sandwiches filled to the edge.

With recent highlights like an egg salad sandwich on fresh bread and a delightful concoction of wedges, dill, sour cream and chives jammed between slices, this is where sandwich dreams come true.

The vibe is always warm, welcoming, and a little bit cheeky, and while the tiny store means you may line up for a minute, trust us - it's worth it.

New kids on the block, & Sando is the latest venture from celebrated chef Matt Moran, who has opened this retro sandwich shop right next door to Compa Steakhouse.

The menu is short and simple, displaying a mix of sweet and savoury bites. Cinnamon buns, tarts and cheesecake will keep the sweet tooth visitors happy, while the sandos will certainly have you back for more.

The Chix Schnitz is complete with tomato, cabbage and provolone, but the steak sandwich with caramelised onion, beetroot and cheese has our full attention.

With all this chat about loaded sandos, we can't forget everyone's favourite Vietnamese street eats: the juicy banh mi.

For a banh mi that is loaded with either crispy roast pork, tofu or housemade Lao sausage plus all the trimmings, you must pay a visit to Miss Vans.

The crunchy rolls could (almost) cure the most horrid of hangovers, or adequately subside the strongest cravings for something salty and savoury. There are also bowls of hot pho and noodle salads on the lunch menu that get our tick of approval.

Neon signs, bold artwork and splashes of blue, red and pink welcome you into Bad Bunny, known for their seriously good sandwiches.

As much about the funky decor as the loaded sandos, Bad Bunny is the place to be seen in Canberra. The sandwiches are fresh and flavourful, with options for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans.

From a loaded Rueben and beef and bacon burger to a vegan pulled mushroom sandwich and halloumi and avo special with a fried egg, we think one visit to see this fun crew won't suffice.
