Maeda Newtown

Right in the centre of King Street, Maeda Newtown is one of those café discoveries that feels both familiar and delightfully unexpected.

Maeda blends Japanese-inspired flavours with modern café classics — think specialty coffee and matcha drinks paired with dishes like fluffy French toast, onigiri rice balls, burrata with shimeji mushrooms, or their crowd-pleasing karaage chicken rolls. The menu changes seasonally, but everything lands with that thoughtful balance of flavour and freshness that keeps people coming back.

Black Star Pastry Newtown

From their humble beginnings in Newtown, Black Star Pastry quickly became a household name across Sydney for their Instaworthy Strawberry Watermelon Cake.

They have since opened stores across Sydney, Rosebery being one of them, where they continue to handmake all their treats with all unnatural ingredients.

Despite being most well-known for their sweet treats, Black Star also whip up a mean pie, with flavours like Japanese curry and beef rendang up for grabs. To finish up your meal on an extra fun note, be sure to take a peek at the limited edition flavours on sale that week.

Shenkin

With outposts across the Inner West, Shenkin in Newtown is a local favourite for top-notch coffee and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Light-filled and vintage in decor, the cafe serves up signature coffee, sweet and savoury Israeli-style pastries and our favourite Middle Eastern essentials like hummus and halloumi. Yum. Our hearts lie with the hand-held pitas which come stuffed with your choice of filling and lashings of fresh herbs and spices, all drizzled with a moreish spiced sauce.

Tokyo Lamington

On the delightfully peaceful Australia Street, lies one of our favourite nooks of the city — Tokyo Lamington. This petite cafe is a haven of little treats from the alternative latte menu (think black sesame and lamington) to the rotating selection of featherlight lamingtons. Rotating limited edition flavours with a dedicated core range, you can expect the likes of fairy bread, yuzu meringue, lychee and peanut chocolate.

If you’re leaning savoury, a concise menu of handmade pies and onigiri will satiate you.

Sitchu Tip: Just next door you’ll find one of our favourite stores, Hands. Full of bright and quirky bits and bobs, leave some time for a good old browse.

Newtown’s Soul Brew is a little hole-in-the-wall café paying homage to lost legends of the music scene. With murals of Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Amy Winehouse adorning the walls, alongside other infamous 27 Club members, Soul Brew sets the scene for a moody moment.

The menu offers up familiar favourites with a Southeast Asian twist, bringing various flavours from passed-down family recipes. Think miso green bowls, katsu chicken sandos and Thai corn fritters.

Set just off King Street, Brewtown is an industrial-chic hangout popular with local freelancers looking for a quiet workspace and an all-day dining menu.

If the aromas from the onsite bakery and in-house coffee roasters don’t have you hooked, then the dessert-lined counters will. Peeling your eyes away is almost too hard to handle.

Swing by for one of their happy hour deals and a few pastizzi and you’ll leave one happy camper indeed. Fancy something heftier? The ravioli is also to die for.
