This 3,000sqm Food Mecca Is Going Full Halloween

Hay St Market

A haunted laneway dinner, frightfully delicious cocktails and a late-night Day of the Dead party: Hay St Market, the sprawling new 3,000sqm dining mecca next to Paddy’s Market in Haymarket, might just be the spot for Halloween this year.

On Friday 30 October, strap in for a six-course Haunted Laneway Harvest Dinner, complete with Tanqueray cocktails and live R&B from Suite AZ. For $110 per person (drinks included), you’ll work your way through themed plates from beetroot borscht served in a syringe to Dracula’s Lamb Shank and Black Magic Fondant, with roaming zombies and a tarot reader keeping things interesting between courses.

The following night, Saturday 31 October, swap your dinner seat for the dance floor at the free-entry Day of the Dead Party. The fun starts with happy hour from 5pm–7pm, followed by a free salsa lesson at 6pm to get you moving before DJs and live musicians take over with salsa, bachata and reggaeton. Street food and Halloween cocktails will keep you going well past your usual bedtime.

For those with little monsters in tow, free school holiday activities run 12pm–2pm, Wednesday to Friday, until 9 October. Book ahead for balloon shows, face painting and trick-or-treat tote decorating, or just pop down and see what exciting limited-edition food and drink specials are lurking around the market. From Pumpkin Spice Danish and Midnight Ink Pasta to Terror-misu, raspberry-filled Vampire Bomboloni and a blood-red cookie sandwich filled with blue bubblegum gelato, there’s plenty to tempt you.
