Sydney takes the top spot nationally, but look a little closer, and there’s an even more interesting accolade tucked into the results.

The Index ranks 1,000 cities across the globe, looking beyond economic clout to consider Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance, and Australia has come up trumps.
Sydney leads the local contingent at 13 globally, followed by Melbourne at 16, Brisbane at 36, Perth at 44, Canberra at 45 and Adelaide at 70. It’s a genuinely broad showing, spanning economic, social and environmental measures alike.

The national capital may sit at 45 overall, but there’s one result worth making a fuss of. Canberra has taken out the world’s top ranking for Quality of Life, putting it ahead of every other city assessed in the category.
