Australia is having a rather good moment on the global city stage, with six Australian cities landing among the world’s top 100 in Oxford Economics’ latest Global Cities Index. Sydney takes the top spot nationally, but look a little closer, and there’s an even more interesting accolade tucked into the results.

Six Australian Cities Have Made the Global Top 100

The Index ranks 1,000 cities across the globe, looking beyond economic clout to consider Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance, and Australia has come up trumps.

Sydney leads the local contingent at 13 globally, followed by Melbourne at 16, Brisbane at 36, Perth at 44, Canberra at 45 and Adelaide at 70. It’s a genuinely broad showing, spanning economic, social and environmental measures alike.

Canberra Is the World’s Top Spot for Quality of Life

The national capital may sit at 45 overall, but there’s one result worth making a fuss of. Canberra has taken out the world’s top ranking for Quality of Life, putting it ahead of every other city assessed in the category.

And the reasoning tracks: high salaries, low income inequality, the kind of job security that comes with a government town, plus healthcare, life expectancy and cultural access that punch well above their weight.

So, while Sydney gets to wear the crown on paper, Canberra might just be the one worth paying attention to if you’re plotting your next move.

Global City Index Frequently Asked Questions

The Index assesses cities across four core categories: Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance, alongside broader economic performance. This means factors like healthcare, income equality, life expectancy and cultural access are weighted alongside traditional economic measures, rather than ranking cities on economic clout alone. It’s this broader scope that allows cities like Canberra to lead a specific category despite a more modest overall position.

Canberra topped the Quality of Life category globally, ahead of every other city assessed. The result is attributed to high salaries, low income inequality, and the job security that comes with being a government town, alongside healthcare, life expectancy and cultural access that punch above their weight. This stands in contrast to Canberra’s more modest 45th place in the overall rankings.

Yes, Sydney takes the top spot nationally, ranking 13th globally overall, the highest position of any Australian city in the Index. However, Sydney does not top every individual category. Canberra, despite ranking lower overall at 45th, claimed the world’s number one position specifically for Quality of Life, a result Sydney did not achieve.

The Global Cities Index is Oxford Economics’ annual ranking of 1,000 cities worldwide. Rather than measuring economic output alone, it assesses cities across Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance. This broader scope is why several Australian cities feature prominently despite not having the scale of the world’s largest economic capitals. The full methodology and results are published by Oxford Economics.
