Melbourne’s New Nude Sauna Night Asks One Very Bare Question

Melbourne has fallen hard for saunas, cold plunges and the ritual of a post-work reset. Now a new Preston event is asking a more revealing question: are we ready to do it without swimmers?

BARE, launching at Wellness Social Club on Tuesday 14 July, invites guests to experience sauna and contrast therapy without clothing, borrowing from bathing cultures in countries such as Finland, Germany and Japan, where nudity in heat rooms is considered practical rather than provocative. Locally, of course, the idea still carries a charge. That is partly the point.

Created by Wellness Social Club founder Tamara O’Dowd, the event is designed to strip sauna back to heat, recovery and the body itself, rather than the increasingly curated performance of wellness.

“In many parts of the world, this is just how sauna is experienced. It’s practical, it’s respectful, and it’s not something people think twice about,” says O’Dowd. “In Australia, wellness can feel more curated and externally focused, and BARE is about challenging that perspective.”

The 60-minute sessions are capped at 20 guests, with attendees moving at their own pace between a Finnish sauna and hot and cold plunge pool areas. Swimwear is optional for those who prefer it, and every guest must acknowledge the event guidelines and sign a waiver before purchasing a ticket.

O’Dowd says there is a physical argument for going without swimwear, too. “Swimwear can trap heat and sweat, making it harder for your body to regulate properly,” she says. “When your skin is exposed, heat spreads more evenly, improving circulation and your natural sweat response.”

Beyond the science, BARE is also a small rebellion against the mirror-facing version of modern wellness, the one concerned with how health looks online. Here, phones, performance and curated ritual give way to something older and less decorated: heat, cold, skin, breath and the strange relief of not dressing the experience up.

Sessions run from 7:30pm to 8:30pm and 8:30pm to 9:30pm at Wellness Social Club in Preston. Tickets are $66 per person and include a non-alcoholic beverage.
