The Locals

A 10-minute drive from Wollongong, Thirroul is a beautiful coastal town that offers all the benefits of living by the water, without the hordes. Living in Thirroul means enjoying the suburb’s shining star, Thirroul Beach, which is loved by locals and visitors for its swell, saltwater rock pool, grassy picnic areas, and a string of surrounding eateries and shops. The suburb promotes an active, outdoorsy lifestyle, with great cycling tracks, parks, and bushwalking trails all within reach. The Sublime Walking Track is the most popular, and its accessibility is one of the many reasons more people are making a sea change.

Thirroul is neatly placed between Austinmer and Bulli, both areas with plenty of charm and conveniences, while Sydney is an hour away. Many residents commute to and from the city for work, and living in Thirroul is the perfect escape from the daily grind – relaxed, slow-paced, and community-focused, with room to move.

The arts and culture scene is lively. There are three galleries in town as well as Anita’s Theatre, a live music venue. Ask locals about the best time to visit, and they’ll say summer or the weekend of the Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival – this festival treats locals to lively art displays, carnival rides, market stalls, music performances, and a junior surf competition for a weekend every March/April. Best of all, the funds are funnelled back into the community each year.

Area Features

Thirroul Beach

The beating heart of the suburb is Thirroul Beach, a patrolled stretch of sand with great surfing and swimming conditions as well as a saltwater pool. The beach is dog-friendly in the early mornings and evenings, and home to BBQ facilities, picnic shelters and Thirroul Kiosk for seaside snacks.

Bike Tracks

Thirroul is a cyclist’s dream, with beautiful biking paths along the coastline. The Wollongong to Thirroul bike track is one of the most popular, which starts at Thirroul and stretches all the way to Wollongong Harbour. Professionals share the wide, flat path with kids and more leisurely riders.

Cafe Culture

Thirroul’s burgeoning café and dining scene just keeps getting better. Curbside or beachside, each has its own unique character and is all about good food and coffee.

Thirroul prides itself on diversity, with a good mix of younger and older couples, growing families, and retirees, along with cashed-up professionals, many of whom catch the train to and from Sydney for work. There are plenty of students, as well as creatives who love the accepting vibe, lifestyle and proximity to the beach. The community spirit is alive and well in Thirroul, and it’s the kind of place where neighbours know each other’s names.
