Have you noticed your view on second-hand shopping shifting in recent years? With the climate crisis intensifying and the rising cost of living, it’s no wonder many of us are rethinking our shopping habits in a big way.

Whether you’re trying to rediscover pieces in your wardrobe instead of buying something new for every season and event or resisting those tempting Instagram ads (no judgement! We know that’s easier said than done), shopping consciously and intentionally has never been more important.

Consignment stores have become hugely popular as these attitudes evolve, popping up in neighbourhoods everywhere. But how do they work, and are they worth exploring?

How Do Consignment Stores Work?

Consignment stores take in high-quality, gently used clothing and accessories from individuals and sell them on their behalf, with profits shared between the store and the seller—a win-win for everyone.

Each store sets its own commission rate, often negotiating with sellers on a case-by-case basis. It's a great way of earning a bit of cash the next time you're doing your wardrobe cleanout, too.

For shoppers, it’s an opportunity to purchase pre-loved items and give them a second life, keeping them out of landfill. It’s a feel-good way to shop while supporting circular fashion.

This model makes designer and quality fashion more accessible at lower prices while promoting sustainability by extending each item’s lifecycle. Consignment shopping offers a chance to unearth truly special, eco-friendly and wallet-friendly pieces.

Reseller

Reseller

Reseller in Manly's ethos is about curated, high-end pieces dropped off by locals. The boutique strongly focuses on sustainable fashion made to last, and it won't accept fast fashion brands and mass-market items.

This high standard results in a seriously chic and stylish edit of both men's and women's clothing. Brands like Ganni, Camilla and Marc, Sir the Label, and Lee Mathews can be found here, as well as a slew of divine accessories, bags and shoes.

From P.E Nation to Lover, Ena Pelly, Alemais and Rebecca Vallance, it's packed with amazing Australian brands. They also have adorable kidswear and regularly hold flash sales, which you can find out about ahead of the pack if you sign up for their alerts.

Swop

SWOP

At first glance, SWOP may appear as a regular retail store—what with its on-trend curations. But the genius behind this multi-store outfit exclusively sells items sourced directly from the community. Anyone can bring clean, seasonal pieces for cash or store credit.

They go out of their way to source pieces for everyone, too, so whatever size you're after, you can find something in-store. Venla

Venla

A game-changing concept with stores popping up all over Sydney, Venla's approach differs slightly from most consignment stores. Using a rent-a-rack model lets individuals sell their preloved clothing easily and affordably. Sellers can opt for self-service, or an all-inclusive option.

With this model, sellers rent a rack in the store to display their clothes, set their own prices, and keep the profits from each sale. Venla provides an accessible, community-driven approach to resale, giving sellers control over their sales process while making it easy for shoppers to find stylish, one-of-a-kind pieces.

The shop is mapped out by each seller's rack, so while you do need the stars to align in terms of taste and sizing, when it does, it's oh-so-sweet.

Manly, Mosman, Bondi, Balmain, Cronulla
