Living in Neutral Bay
The Locals

Living in Neutral Bay lures professionals and young families with its mouth-watering eateries, plentiful green spaces, access to much sought-after schools, and incredible vistas of the city skyline and Sydney Harbour. If this wasn’t enough, busy professionals who are always on the go only have to endure a 20-minute commute to the city. Living in Neutral Bay also offers three major supermarkets, cozy cafés, and intimate eateries, with a particular preference for Japanese food. The main standout is the local watering hole, The Oaks Hotel, with its multiple bars, function space, and popular beer garden beneath a fairy-lit oak tree.

Step away from the main strip, and Neutral Bay takes on a completely different feel. The quiet meandering streets have historic cottages, lofty apartments, and Federation and contemporary mansions, most with views or, at the very least, glimpses of the city skyline and Sydney Harbour. There are multiple access points to the harbour at Neutral Bay Wharf, Kurraba Point Wharf, and Kurraba Point Reserve. Neutral Bay Wharf is home to the local hangout, Thelma & Louise Café, which looks out over moored yachts and a local beach. Weekends and summer evenings can be easily whiled away at Kurraba Point Reserve.

Area Features

Commute

Easy travel to the city. Many locals boast a 20-minute door-to-door commute which allows them to finish work late and still be home in time for dinner. Many commuters choose the Neutral Bay ferry service to start and finish their working day taking in the beauty of Sydney Harbour.

Dine

Jumping off the bus at Neutral Bay Junction and having a choice of picking up some groceries from one of the three major supermarkets, or grabbing a quick bite for dinner at one of the Asian restaurants and eateries.

May Gibbs

Neutral Bay was home for the beloved Australian children’s author and illustrator, May Gibbs, who is most renowned for her Snugglepot and Cuddlepie series. She is remembered by a large mural at May Gibbs Place (off Military Road) and at her former house, which is now a house and garden museum called May Gibbs Nutcote.

Kurraba Reserve

Kurraba Reserve is a natural playground along the foreshore – plenty of green space to run around in, park benches to soak up the views and a launching area for small boats and yachts.

White-collar professionals with families are the predominant group among the inhabitants of the historic cottages, Federation and contemporary houses. Many families are attracted to the area so their children can attend the highly-desirable Neutral Bay Primary School and enjoy accessibility to the private high schools in neighbouring North Sydney and Kirribilli. Retirees who have lived in the area for a long time and young professionals are attracted to the small-scale red brick Art Deco apartments. There are also traditional high-rise buildings and newer boutique apartments.
