From premium local produce to vintage finds and handmade homewares, these are the best markets in Hobart and surrounds to pay a visit.

There's something about markets that ring in the weekend like nothing else, and it is truly a perk of Hobart and its outskirts, that every market you’ll head to for a coffee and a wander, means also being flanked by gorgeous mountain views.

It’s also no secret that Tasmania is seeing a growing number of creative mainlanders moving south, and when combined with those born and bred locals who have been cultivating incredible produce and their own craft skills for years; it’s no surprise that this island state's local markets are well stocked with some excellent finds.

Yes, that's right. The best markets in Hobart are full to the brim with fresh local produce, handcrafted wares, friendly faces and delicious food and drink that run the gamut from scallop pies and sheep whey vodka to luscious Bruny Island oysters and creamy Leatherwood honey stacked high. So come with empty bags and bellies, because these laden stalls will both inspire and delight.

Farm Gate Market

Farm Gate Market

When Sunday morning rolls around, Hobart’s FFarm Gate Market (affectionately known as Farmy) buzzes with energy, and it’s easy to see why Lonely Planet has crowned it a must-visit travel trend for 2025. This is your one-stop shop for fresh local produce in abundance. Local purveyors line the street, with stalls overflowing with fresh fruit and veg, artisanal baked goods, and even small-batch spirits. Start your morning at Farmy’s Grub Hub with breakfast from one of the many food trucks before diving into this sensory playground of Tasmanian goodness. It’s not just a market—it’s an experience that captures the soul of slow, local travel.

8:30am to 1pm, Sundays

104 Bathurst Street, Hobart

Salamanca Market

Salamanca Market

This well-known long-running market is a must-visit for market lovers in Hobart. Salamanca Market celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2022, and in that time it’s grown to include over 300 stallholders, encompassing just about anything local you can think of, from records and woodwork stalls to Leatherwood honey and whisky producers. So central you can shuffle straight from one of Hobart’s many fabulous hotels into an excellent coffee and a Lady Hester sourdough donut.

Sitchu Tip: Don't miss out on the Tasmanian institution that is the humble curry scallop pie either.

Tasmanian Produce Market

The Tasmanian Produce Market is the eastern shore’s answer to Farm Gate – a weekly market offering food, drinks and design stalls. It’s run by the same folks responsible for the Twilight Market in the CBD, and they’ve rounded up some of the best local producers to sell their wares. From the freshest bread and donuts to sweet and juicy fruit and organic veggies, you’ll leave laden with enough food to last you a month. Stop at a food van on-site for sustenance and make sure you taste-test some local gin or whisky on your way through.

New Norfolk Market

New Norfolk Market

Make a day of it and drive the 30 minutes out of Hobart to the small town of New Norfolk. Its local market is held each Saturday and stretches almost the whole way down the main drag – full of knick-knacks and vintage treasures, plants and flowers, second-hand books and toys, design stalls stocked with wares from local artisans as well as food stalls and vans. A classic local flea market vibe, it has a wholesome community feel.

Willie Smiths Artisan Markets

Journey out of the city just half hour down south to the Huon Valley, where among the apple orchards you’ll find Willie Smiths Apple Shed. On Saturdays you can hit up their Artisan Market – a worthy array of artisan wares and produce from the area. When you’ve finished browsing through the local gin, pickles and preserves, and handmade ceramics, be sure to head back into the Apple Shed or it’s very comfortable outdoor space, for an organic apple cider in the sunshine.

Being Tassie, you’ll naturally find many a cute vintage sweater here, alongside the likes of vintage footwear, handmade jewellery, retro homewares and a whole lot more. Great for families and pooch parents alike, the market is held year-round at Brooke Street Pier in the city, with a second spot during the summer months nearby in Sandy Bay. Trust us, you'll have zero regrets pulling in for a tray of Bruny Island oysters on in either location.
