Uncovering Six of Perth’s Trendiest Precincts to Call Home

We take a look at six Perth suburbs bursting with energy and culture.

Packed with culinary delights, creative pursuits, and rich community spirit, these are six of Perth’s coolest neighbourhoods for those looking to move to the west coast.

Mount Lawley

With Beaufort Street running through its heart, the suburb of Mount Lawley is a hotbed for culture and entertainment. It offers a great selection of cafes, globally inspired restaurants, and nightlife, running the gamut from small bars to low-key pubs. Peruse bookshops and vintage stores, then salute the sun at one of the neighbourhood’s many yoga studios. Mount Lawley is also known for its interesting architecture, including the art deco Astor Theatre, and some lovely Federation homes. Location wise, it’s an easy five-minute drive from central Perth and well connected by public transport.

Leederville

One of Perth’s most fashionable inner-city hubs, Leederville is known for its cafes and restaurants along with an eclectic shopping scene, centred on Oxford Street. It’s flanked by Lake Monger, with its pretty cycling and walking track, and lush lawns. Enjoy brunch at neighbourhood favourites Babylon Café or Pixel Coffee Brewers and catch a flick at the art deco Luna Leederville. Leederville’s streets blend character-rich and industrial architecture with considered new apartments made for a modern lifestyle. Just five minutes from the CBD, it’s well connected with public transport making it popular among students and young professionals.

North Perth

The in-demand area of North Perth combines a central position with a great selection of eateries and bars. The Angove Street strip is home to beautiful one-off boutiques, art galleries and alfresco cafes, creating a vibrant village atmosphere. The suburb shows off its 1900s architecture and there’s lovely heritage homes and quaint cottages, coupled with boutique new apartment blocks. Catch live music at local institution The Rosemount Hotel and keep active at its state-of-the-art leisure centre with six indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Shop for farm-fresh produce at Kyilla Community Farmers’ Market each Saturday morning. With everything in easy reach, residents of North Perth have little reason to venture far.

Fremantle

Fremantle – or Freo – has become synonymous with trend-setters thanks to its bustling food and drink scene and strong bohemian spirit. Sitting roughly 30 minutes from Perth, the port city has a colourful maritime history, and stunning heritage streetscapes in West End. Today, however, it’s best known as a hipster haven, thick with breweries, coffee shops and street art. Cool off at Bathers Beach, popular for swimming and paddle boarding, then enjoy a pint at stalwart Little Creatures Brewery. Local descend on the Fremantle Markets (Friday to Sunday) for its fantastic fresh produce and vibrant atmosphere.

Northbridge

A stone’s throw from the CBD, the urban suburb of Northbridge is known as the epicentre of all things creative. Jam-packed with independent bars and eateries, live music joints and fashion boutiques – centred on William Street – it is a hive of activity at all hours. The suburb’s artistic veins run deep, housing the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of Western Australia, while a walk through its backstreets will reveal notable street art and plenty of charm. Northbridge is undergoing significant development with a spate of boutique, ‘hotel-style’ luxury apartments in the works.

West Perth

Delve into West Perth and you’ll find there’s plenty going on. Split into two sections, the district has seen a revival in recent years, with high rise apartments and office blocks, adding to the suburb’s older-style houses. Sitting on the edge of Kings Park, locals can take in stunning panoramas on its network of cycling paths and walking trails, or picnic among colourful wildflowers. There are foodie hotspots, such as West End Deli and Gordon St Garage, and large-scale retailers including the Watertown Brand Outlet Centre. West Perth is a stroll to the CBD along Hay Street or a quick, five-minute ride on the train.
