Little Brother Small Bar Joins Mount Hawthorn’s Quiet North End
Light-filled interiors, good wine, affordable pints — everything a local should be, tucked away in Mount Hawthorn’s northern stretch.

On Mount Hawthorn’s quieter northern edge, Little Brother Small Bar slides in as a welcoming new local — the kind of place you can wander into on autopilot.
It’s designed as a true community bar, a place that functions as a “third place” for the area: familiar, low-key and shaped by the people who drop in.
On any afternoon, you’ll find its rhythm unfolding naturally. A man at the alfresco table out front works through a crossword between sips of red wine. Inside, a group of friends settle into the couch, lingering over empty plates. A couple leans against the bar, ordering the first drink of the weekend. Cricket plays silently (and in black and white) on an art frame TV, more ambient than attention-grabbing — there if you want it, easy to ignore if you don’t.

Owner Brett McDonnell wants Little Brother Small Bar to feel like it belongs to the neighbourhood, and he’s starting simply: great wines by the glass or bottle, $12 pints from mates at Dingo Brewing, complimentary popcorn and unfussy share plates built on quality produce. After 25 years in the food wholesale end of hospo, McDonnell already had a list of trusted suppliers ready to go. Classic cocktails and a larger food menu will roll out once the small team finds its pace.
Sitchu tip: Save room for dessert! Chef’s chocolate mousse is a must.
The fully revamped space is spread across what was once two shopfronts, with a striking curved bar greeting you upon entry — as inviting as the kitchen bench you crowd around at home. The interiors have a calm glow, with magenta trims, soft pink tiles, terrazzo tables and plenty of natural light filtering through. Out front, alfresco tables catch the breeze; out back, a quieter, hidden courtyard lies waiting for balmy evenings and sun-drenched weekends.

Located at 19A Green Street, about a ten to fifteen-minute walk from the suburb’s main drag, Little Brother Small Bar fills a long-standing gap for locals on the northern fringe of Mount Hawthorn and nearby Joondanna — finally giving this end of the neighbourhood the casual, close-to-home bar it’s been missing.
Little Brother Small Bar is now open from 2pm Wednesday to Thursday, and from 12pm Friday to Sunday.
