How to Transform Your House into a Sophisticated Smart Home in 2023

Life’s cluttered enough, let your home do the heavy lifting for you by streamlining your tech set-up.

We’ve partnered with Samsung to show you how easy it is to transform your household into a sophisticated smart home.

Australian homes are a vibrant tapestry of great family moments amid the fast-paced nature of modern living. As families juggle multiple work commitments, school pickups, social events, life admin and more, any efficiencies in the home that give them more time back for the things they love — and less time doing chores — are incredibly valuable.

Encouragingly, you don’t need to look far to uncover the incredible potential of your homes’ appliances. Australian homes are often filled with dozens of smart devices that have quietly become integrated with their daily lives. From intelligent thermostats that regulate temperatures to smart speakers that respond to our every command, these cutting-edge products are capable of so much more when they’re unified and connected.

While the world is filled with many different devices, the good news is that it’s not so hard to integrate what you already have. Intelligent services like Samsung's SmartThings[1] Samsung’s free app that connects and manages smart devices in the home, can seamlessly integrate thousands of devices from hundreds of vendors[2], unlocking some huge benefits that make day-to-day activities much easier. It also doesn’t take a five-step process and multiple instruction manuals, as many devices can be integrated into a single ecosystem with the touch of a button.

It’s what Samsung has cleverly coined the ‘Calm Tech’ era, where less really is more. With the help of their free and innovative SmartThings app, Samsung is on a mission to help people cut out all the tech complexity in their lives and empower them to enjoy a more sustainable, connected and personalised lifestyle.

Wondering how you can turn your house into a sophisticated smart home in 2023? Keep reading as we explore how each room can be a beacon of innovation and simplicity with Samsung and SmartThings.

Living Room

The heart of every home is the living room. It’s where we come to unwind, to connect with our loved ones, and to create memories.

That’s why we love Samsung’s 85” Neo QLED 8K Smart TV — it’s the pinnacle of picture quality and has virtually no bezel so you can enjoy a near edge-to-edge picture. These TVs seamlessly integrate with other smart devices and platforms, allowing you to stream your favourite shows, movies, and music with ease.

Even better, with the power of SmartThings, this TV has access to SmartThings Energy, empowering Australians to easily monitor and manage the energy the device is using, whilst recommending ways for households to be energy efficient.

Samsung research shows Australians love larger screens, with 95 percent of new big-screen TV owners reporting they were happy with the size of their TV or wished they’d gone bigger[3]. It may sound large, but most Australian living rooms have the space to create a true cinematic experience at home—simply ensure that there are 2.6 metres between your 85-inch TVs and the couch.

With the 85” Neo QLED 8K, you can be confident that you’ve made the best decision for your entertainment hub for years to come.

Laundry

The laundry is no longer an unglamorous and aesthetically drab room to be hidden away. Samsung research shows that 46 per cent of Australians wish they had a nicer laundry, with 33 per cent saying they want it to be a place of pride[4] .

Enter Samsung’s new BESPOKE AI™ Smart Washer and Dryer, not only is this duo super minimal and chic-looking, but they also use advanced AI technology with sensors that can weigh and sense how dirty your washing is to automatically adjust the settings, detergent and time needed. It even learns your usage patterns and help to care for your clothes to ease the mental load of laundry day.

Oh, and the best part? The washing machine can link to the dryer so it automatically knows what drying cycle to use. And on super speed cycle can wash and dry your clothes within two hours.

When connected to SmartThings, you can start, stop and even monitor your cycles remotely for more intuitive time management so your day doesn’t revolve around doing laundry. Pretty clever, right?

Kitchen

There’s nothing worse than getting back from the weekly grocery shop only to realise you forgot to get something (i.e., the milk!). That’s where Samsung’s genius Family HubTM Smart Fridge comes into the equation. This hardworking appliance was made to help smooth out any kinks in your routine.

This clever fridge is always a step ahead of the curve thanks to its high-tech features. There’s an in-built camera that shows you what's inside the fridge while you’re at the shops (honestly, where has this feature been all our lives?), it has the ability to tag food expiration dates and it connects with the Smart Recipes App to suggest recipes based on your nutritional goals and the ingredients in the fridge. Less food waste and less thinking about what’s for dinner is a win-win in our eyes!

The screen allows you to remove all messy magnets and notes so that your fridge is neat. It can also check your calendar, and the weather, or send a memo, use the SmartThings app to answer the door and let you know when a washing cycle has finished in the laundry via an alert on your fridge[5]. It’s almost like having your own PA!

If that’s not enough, it can sync with Spotify or tune-in radio apps so you can pick your favourite playlist while you’re trying not to massacre that tricky recipe again[6]. Or, for the more sentimental at heart, why not connect it to your Google Photos[7] to transform your fridge into a beautiful digital walk down memory lane?

Home Office

The humble home office has evolved over the past three years, and we’ve come to expect a lot from our workstations. With many Australians now embracing a hybrid working week, we’re hungry for smart solutions to make our work life easier.

Samsung’s new, stylish Smart Monitor M7 will quickly become the MVP of your home office (and beyond!) thanks to its incredible versatility. Featuring a sleek, cutting-edge design with an ultra-slim back and clever detachable camera (sold separately), it looks stunning in any room. It also has a huge range of productivity apps and remote PC access for full functionality.

The Smart Monitor also means you can enjoy a full Smart TV experience and binge-watch your favourite content[8], including over 90 free channels with Samsung TV Plus[9]. We love to see it.

Bedroom

There is nowhere in the home more sacred than the bedroom. It’s the space where we rest our bodies in our never-ending quest for a (hopefully) decent night’s sleep. Why not enhance your sleeping environment with Samsung’s BESPOKE Cube™ Smart Air Purifier? Not only is it elegantly designed, but it’s also virtually silent and removes up to 99.97%[10] all the large and ultra-fine particles in the air. Sync it up to the SmartThings app and you can monitor and control the air quality in your bedroom from anywhere.

Speaking of getting those precious zeds, monitor your sleep patterns and track your health with one of Samsung's wearable devices, like the Galaxy Watch5, providing valuable insights for optimising your well-being.

If you’re a TV-in-the-bedroom kind of person, Samsung’s The Frame TV perfectly complements the décor of your precious inner sanctum. With Smart Hub built-in, The Frame goes above and beyond to help make your life easier and automate key functions by connecting to compatible smartphones, air conditioners, dryers, refrigerators, lights, blinds, and doorbells.[11]

This means you can check who’s at the door, switch off the lights, adjust the temperature and double-check what’s in your fridge right from the comfort of your bedroom. And when you turn off The Frame TV, it transforms into a stunning piece of framed art thanks to Samsung’s access to over 2,000 works of art[12]. Available via Samsung’s Art Store, the premium pieces have been hand-picked from leading global galleries (think the Louvre and Tate Modern). So fancy, so chic!

Shared Spaces

Whether it’s a rumpus room, a chill-out zone, or a spare room with multi-uses, transform these communal spaces into smart havens that suit your lifestyle. Start by incorporating Samsung's smart televisions, like the 85” Neo QLED 8K Smart TV, or The Frame, or even The Freestyle or The Premiere Laser 4K projector, which can turn these spaces into versatile entertainment hubs.

Why not level up your audio experience while you’re at it with Samsung's Soundbars, delivering rich and immersive sound quality? Connect your entertainment ecosystem with Samsung's SmartThings hub, allowing you to connect and control various compatible devices[13], from lighting to home theatre systems, using a single interface.

Then, tackle the laborious task of vacuuming your shared spaces with the nifty new BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+. This incredible device features SmartThings Pet Service, which uses a front-facing camera to stream a live feed of your furry friends, and the ability to intelligently classify floor surfaces and density to adjust suction power and brush speed, completely automatically. Come on, who hasn’t dreamed of a robot vacuum?

Whether it’s a fridge that helps make dinner decisions easy or a washer-dryer that saves you time, embracing smart technology can transform more than your home — it can take the stress out of everyday life. And, who doesn’t want that?
