Established in the 1820s, Launceston’s City Park is just a short stroll from East Launceston. Once called the ‘People’s Park’, City Park has a kid’s playground, cafes, multiple picnic spots, and its most unusual feature – a Japanese Macaque monkey enclosure. The park’s unlikely residents were a gift from Launceston’s sister city, Ikeda in Japan, and have lived there since the 1980s.

When it comes to education, East Launceston has several public and private schools catering to the many families that call the suburb home. Younger children can attend East Launceston Primary School, Launceston Church Grammar School or St. Thomas More's Catholic Primary School, while many secondary school-aged children attend nearby Newstead College or private school Scotch Oakburn College.

Foodies are well catered for in East Launceston. Maple Café, Relish Café and Le Café on St George are all cosy spots for coffee and brunch, while Eat Street’s pop-up restaurants regularly provide hearty fare for lunch and dinner. Nearby Launceston CBD has multiple supermarkets for weekly shopping and groceries.

The suburb is well-served in terms of healthcare facilities, with the Launceston General Hospital located nearby.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

From dance classes at the East Launceston Bowls Club to football games at nearby ovals, community spirit is alive and well in East Launceston. It’s a suburb where friendly families regularly come together, and everyone knows their neighbours.

CITY PARK

There aren’t many places in Australia where you can stroll into the city centre and see a Japanese Macaque monkey enclosure. Entry is free to this well-maintained park, and you can spend an afternoon exploring the park’s flower displays, playing a game of outdoor chess, or picnicking on the lawn.

CAFE CULTURE

It’s no secret that Tasmania’s produce is some of the best, and it’s on show at East Launceston’s local cafes. Relish Café on Arthur Street is one of our favourite spots for well-priced coffee with scrambled eggs on toast, freshly baked pastries and banana bread, and decadent milkshakes.
