The Bermuda Shorts About to Take Over Summer

Consider this your official invitation to give those tiny shorts a break.

Longer, looser and infinitely more wearable than their teeny-tiny counterparts, bermuda shorts are the wardrobe staple everyone will be reaching for this summer.

I’ll admit, the awkward length didn’t thrill me at first. But like all things in fashion, after sufficient exposure, I’m fully on board, and have found myself saving plenty of bermuda short looks. Personally, I find that pairing them with a shoe that shows more skin (think: thongs, kitten heels, low-vamp ballet flats) helps at least create the illusion of more leg, which, as someone who sits just over 160cm, was one of my main sticking points.

But what you may lose in leg, you gain in versatility. Unlike a short short, these long-line styles can handle everything from beachside lunches to office days and wine bar jaunts, all while feeling considerably cooler and more fashion-forward than your average summer pant. And come autumn, you can still rock them with knee-high boots, so we’re confident the cost-per-wear is worth it.

From breezy cotton pull-ons and laid-back denim to polished tailoring and silk-satin styles, these are the pairs worth making room for this season.

Relaxed Bermuda Shorts

Starting with the shorts you’ll be living in all summer long: the relaxed bermuda short. These are the kind of bottoms you can pull-on with zero effort and feel good in, with an elastic or tie-up waist that moves with you, no matter how bloated you’re feeling throughout the day. Surprisingly, this category still has some elevated options, with silky styles from Beare Park, Venroy and Witchery bringing a touch of class to an otherwise casual silhouette. Then you’ve got your cotton styles. These are going to get you through the hottest of days. In our opinion, Assembly Label truly shines in this department, with a couple of affordable, easy-wearing styles and colourways to choose from.

Denim Bermuda Shorts

Your next step up from the relaxed, pull-on styles above is the denim bermuda shorts, otherwise known as jean shorts, or jorts. Still very casual, but with a little extra weight and structure that carries well into evening with the right styling. Throw on with a pair of ballet flats, a long sleeve white tee and aviator sunnies for everyday style. Or go for a nice top, elegant jewelery and lightweight heel for an effortless after dark look.

Tailored Bermuda Shorts

Just as suited to the office as after dark events, a sleek paired of tailored bermuda shorts works hard. Paired with a boxy blazer and a pair of heels, it feels particularly fresh for work. Switch in a good tank, statement jewelery and tiny thong heels, and you’re good to go on weekends. We particularly like the structure and subdued colour of the Sofie Shorts from Friends With Frank (especially when paired with the matching top). Or for something that feels more fluid, you can’t go wrong with Henne’s Zira Short.

Statement Bermuda Shorts

Chasing something with a little more personality? Whether it’s a lovely lace moment, unexpected detail or pop of colour, these bermuda shorts have a bit more going on than your usual styles. On our wishlist? We’re lusting over DÔEN’s Irsa Shorts, with its elegant storm blue silk-satin fabrication and delicate lace trims. Then there’s Ena Pelly’s camo shorts, which feel edgy and fashion-forward. For something relaxed yet bold, Aere’s striking red pair is the one. Or if you prefer to keep within a neutral palette, Reformation’s lace-trimmed silk pair and Citizens of Humanity’s cut-out style add interest without overpowering.
