The 'Micro Work Retreat' May Just be 2024's Biggest Travel Trend. Here's How to Do It.

This year, we’re combining work and play and taking ourselves on a mid-week working holiday to the Gold Coast.

Burleigh Pavilion

We’ve partnered with Destination Gold Coast to share the biggest travel trend of 2024 - the ‘micro work retreat’ - and why the glittering coastal city is the best place to try it for yourself.

A few years after dreaded lockdowns had us all working in isolation, the majority of Australian workers are settling into their new routines, splitting their time between working from home and being in the office.

In 2024, however, the hybrid work trend is going to a whole new level, with the rise of a brand new travel trend: turning your "sneeky mid-weeky" getaway into a micro work retreat.

Redefining the traditional boundaries between work and leisure, remote work has become increasingly prevalent, meaning it’s possible to combine a trip away for some fun in the sun with a productive work week. Inspired by the “corporate retreats” of eras past, the “micro work retreat” reflects the flexibility that technology and modern work arrangements allow, while highlighting the importance of taking some time out to refresh and rejuvenate.

The perks of jetting away mid-work-week speak for themselves: a change of scenery can invigorate creativity and inspire new ideas and perspectives. Being away from the daily grind can also alleviate stress, help prevent burnout, and achieve a more balanced lifestyle.

Plus, combining work and play can foster a more positive mindset, contributing to an overall better sense of well-being.

So where is the best place to take yourself on a mid-week working holiday? Look no further than the Gold Coast. Renowned for its pristine golden beaches, vibrant food and drink scene and year-round warm weather, the coastal city is the perfect place to book your next “micro work retreat”.

Here, we share how to make the most of your “sneeky mid-weeky” with these golden “micro work retreat” rules.

Rule #1: Find Yourself the Perfect Home Base

The Mysa Motel

A micro work retreat doesn’t mean you can’t stay in style. Step away from your everyday routine by choosing somewhere cool, comfy and charming to rest your head and log in to that 9 a.m. meeting. The Mysa Motel, a seven-bedroom boutique motel in Palm Beach, is a retro-inspired stay located just 11 minutes from Gold Coast Airport - and just a short stroll from stretches of white, sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

Each room is home to a comfortable bed, a stylish ensuite and a “martini courtyard”, plus free Wi-Fi, USB charging ports and smart TV for all your technological needs. And with walls painted in colours like pastel pink, peach and dusky yellow, you’ll have yourself a very enviable zoom background.

Rule #2: Elevate Your Morning Routine

Paradox Coffee Roasters

If, like us, you’re useless without your morning coffee, the Gold Coast has you covered. Don’t be fooled by the laid-back vibes: this is a town that is serious about its beans and its brews. For a top-notch drop, head to Paradox Coffee Roasters, who purchase quality green coffee beans from estate farms and co-operatives where farmers a paid a fair wage for a guilt-free sip. Plus, they also serve up a delectable breakfast influenced by seasonality and made with locally sourced ingredients.

Rule #3: Schedule in Some 'Me Time'

La Luna Beach Club

Be sure to block out some time for a little rest and relaxation during your mid-week work getaway. Our pick? Book your spot by the pool at La Luna Beach Club, Australia’s first floating beach club. The Mediterranean-inspired pool has sun lounges, day beds and cabanas to choose from, all with million-dollar views overlooking the glistening marina.

Be sure to dip your toes in the water, and indulge in a cocktail (like a Frozen Strawberry Rosé or a Tsipouro Sprit) from the club’s extensive list and you’re in for the most relaxing lunch break of your life.

Rule #4: Make Time for Play

Paradise Jet Boating

As the saying goes, when you work hard, you have to play hard, too. Once the working day is done, it’s time to experience all the fun and excitement the Gold Coast has to offer. Combine sightseeing with adrenaline with an exciting jet boat ride with Paradise Jet Boating. Through a combination of high-speed drifting and 360-degree spins, you’ll also be able to check out the stunning scenery of the Gold Coast’s most unique waterways. You’ll cruise past the iconic Sea World theme park and multi-million dollar mansions before heading towards the Marine Park to spot dolphins, wallabies and more. Our tip? Book in advance and block out some time in your diary.

Rule #5: Indulge in the Local Fare

Social Eating House

Once you’ve (literally) worked up an appetite, it’s time to treat yourself to a meal at one of the Gold Coast’s best restaurants: Social Eating House. Owned and operated by three-time consecutive ‘Chef of the Year’ award winner Matthew Jefferson, Social is located in the heart of the always-on-trend Broadbeach and offers up fine dining in a warm, casual setting. The modern Australian menu has been lovingly crafted and features a range of bar snacks, charcuterie, and small and large share plates made with the finest and freshest ingredients.
