I Tried an LED Face Mask to Target My Acne-Prone Skin, Here’s How It Went
It may work for its anti-ageing properties, but is it worth the cost when it comes to acne?
I've never had perfect skin.
Don’t worry, this isn’t a pity party. But I’ve tried an endless list of skincare products in an attempt to calm my skin and give it the nourishment it needs. After destroying my skin barrier and forking out more money than I’d like to admit on skin treatments (which only worked as long as I kept going), I slowly built a routine that helped my skin rather that harmed it. While my acne reduced slightly, it never fully went away.
One of the skin treatments I tried was LED light therapy. While I noticed slight improvements in my skin, it was too expensive to sustain on a weekly basis—and too inconsistent to justify occasional visits. So, when I heard about at-home LED light therapy masks, my interest was piqued.
I’d heard glowing reviews about red light LED masks, but rarely about blue, which was why I always held back from purchasing one. Since my main concern is acne, not ageing, I was hesitant to spend hundreds of dollars on a mask that didn’t seem to target my specific needs.
When I was given the opportunity to test the Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear from Adore Beauty, which has both red and blue LED light, I jumped at the chance.
What is LED Light Therapy?
LED therapy stands for light emitting diode therapy and is a skincare treatment that uses varying light wavelengths–most commonly red and blue–to improve skin health. Originally developed by NASA for plant growth experiments in space, it was later discovered it could treat wounds and skin concerns.
Red and blue light LED therapy are the two main types used by aestheticians. Red light is mostly used for its anti-ageing properties, such as boosting collagen production, improving skin texture, reducing scarring and inflammation. Blue light, the other hand has been found to destroy acne-causing bacteria and improve problematic skin.
What is the Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask?
The Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask is the world’s first FDA-cleared, customisable at-home LED mask. It uses both red and blue LED wavelengths to address anti-ageing and acne concerns, helping to deliver smoother, clearer, more radiant skin.
The mask comes with app connectivity which allows you to customise the areas of your face you’d like to treat and with which type of light. This means you can target specific concerns, tailoring the experience entirely to your needs.
The treatment takes just three-minutes each day, and is designed to fit seamlessly into your nightly skincare routine. It’s easy to use: simply apply to a clean, dry face before continuing on with your usual products.
Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask Review
I tested Qure’s LED light therapy mask every single night for four weeks, across a full menstrual cycle to account for hormonal acne. I didn’t want to think that my skin was clearing thanks to the mask, when it may have been due to the time in my cycle.
Week One:
Initially I was solely focusing on blue light LED therapy to clear my breakouts, and one week in, I hadn’t noticed any major changes. More pimples had started appearing across my face, but this didn’t come as a surprise as blue light can speed the skin’s natural shedding process, bringing underlying pimples to the surface. However, these pimples did calm down slightly quicker than usual, likely thanks to the blue light therapy.
Week Two:
Two weeks in, I started wondering if the LED face mask would be more effective if I kept it on for longer, since three-minutes didn’t seem like a long enough treatment time to be effective–and I’m impatient. I reached out to the Qure customer care team, who explained that the mask’s effectiveness is based on its energy output, not session length.
“Once all of your LED receptors have been activated, any additional LED light will not have an impact (regardless of the session time),” they explained. While longer sessions aren’t harmful, they’re unnecessary. To maximise results, they recommended alternating between red and blue light treatments daily.
So, you best believe that’s exactly what I started doing.
Weeks Three and Four
I started to notice a significant difference during the final two weeks of testing the mask. While my acne didn’t entirely disappear, breakouts were smaller, less painful (goodbye aching mini mountains), and seemed to clear up faster. It was a unexpected delight to see noticeable results so quickly.
While I didn’t notice a change in my redness or scarring–which the red light therapy treats–the Qure customer care team informed me that results from red light LED therapy typically take around eight to 12 weeks, whereas blue light LED results can be seen from as little as two weeks. So, it’s too early to comment on the effectiveness of the red light just yet–but I have high hopes!
Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask: Pros
Noticeable Results
My biggest fear going into trialling the Qure LED face mask was that it wouldn’t be strong enough to provide results, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a positive outcome with the blue LED light–and quickly.
Quick to use
Three minutes out of my day (six when I started integrating red light therapy into my routine, too) isn’t much. I’d sit with the mask on while watching Love Island and have it as part of my pre-bedtime routine.
Is Wireless
One of my favourite aspects of the Qure LED mask is that it’s wireless, so you can go about your night and don’t have to stay put while the LED is working its magic. I would use it as opportunity to speedily multitask and do the dishes, vacuum a room, or put away my laundry.
Comfortable to Wear
The mask has silicone goggles around the eyes so that it sits on your face comfortably and doesn’t hinder your vision.
Customisable Treatment Options
Thanks to the app, you can select areas of your face you want to treat with red light therapy, and ones to treat with blue light–all in the one session–so it’s fully tailored to your needs. Or, you can do what I did, which was three minutes of each treatment all over my face.
I also like that this LED mask has multiple light therapies to choose from, as this is a limitation that comes with a lot of other masks on the market.
Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask: Cons
Expensive
There’s no beating around the bush–this tool isn’t cheap. $500 is a significant investment , so you want to make sure you’re committed before purchasing.
Needs to be Used Consistently for Results
Like most skincare treatments, if you don’t use the Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask regularly, you won’t see results. You need to commit to using this mask every single day to achieve the best outcome.
Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask: The Verdict
If you’re prepared to commit—both financially and in terms of daily use—I highly recommend the Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear Mask! After four weeks, my skin is clearer than it’s been in years, and breakouts are smaller and less frequent. If you’re struggling with acne, breakouts and blemishes and feel like you have tried everything under the sun, this may be the game-changer you’ve been looking for.
It has the green tick of approval from this acne-prone girly!
