We shine a spotlight on seven of the trendiest suburbs in Adelaide.

From food and wine to art, culture and community spirit, these are among Adelaide’s coolest neighbourhoods to explore right now.

Brighton

Beachside Brighton is often dubbed the city’s trendiest coastal neighbourhood. It combines the air of a seaside village with easy connection in and out of the CBD. Locals enjoy a picture-perfect foreshore lined with traditional fish ‘n’ chip shops, while the suburb’s backstreets reveal creative precincts, on-trend cafes and lovely gift shops. Meander down to Summertown Studio, a converted warehouse now home to a coffee shop, local artisans and events space. For families, Brighton’s lifestyle can’t be beat with top schools, spacious properties, and plenty of open space.

Norwood

There’s so much to love about Norwood. With The Parade running through its centre, locals can get their fill of food and drink, with favourites such as Argo, arkhé and 400 Gradi sitting alongside buzzing bars and much-loved watering holes. Wander down the high street of Magill Road to discover an array of antique showrooms, galleries and stylish boutiques. Lying less than 10 minutes from the CBD, leafy Norwood offers a mix of heritage cottages and stunning new apartments, making it a seriously sought-after address among home hunters.

Kent Town

Next door in Kent Town, a selection of luxury new developments is enticing those looking to combine the prestige of the eastern suburbs with the urban convenience of the city centre. This pocket-sized suburb boasts a backdrop of East Adelaide Parklands and Botanic Garden, giving locals a coveted outdoor lifestyle albeit surrounded by dining, shopping and entertainment. It has eateries dotted along King William and Rundle Streets, while in its laneways, creatives are setting up shop peddling all sorts of pursuits.

Bowden

Bowden’s resurgence over the last decade has transformed the city-fringe suburb into a creative hub with wineries, markets, and cultural treats aplenty. It is setting the benchmark for urban renewal projects across Australia, and topping lists as one of the country’s most environmentally conscious communities – developers are well and truly taking note. At its epicentre there’s Plant 4 Bowden, an industrial warehouse now home to eateries, artisan stores and a weekly roster of markets and events. Bowden locals can enjoy an eclectic lifestyle, from live music at The Gov or the Wheaty to a tipple or craft beer at Oddio and dinners at Jarmer’s Kitchen.

Port Adelaide

A creative and culinary influx has made Port Adelaide one of the city’s coolest districts. Steeped in maritime history, today it is home to contemporary galleries and studio spaces (check out the program at Vitalstatistix), while a walk through its cobbled laneways will expose some of Adelaide’s best street art. The neighbourhood is marked by historic pubs, including Port Admiral Hotel and the Birkenhead Tavern, alongside microbreweries such as Pirate Life Brewing. Get caffeinated at Dutch Coffee Lab, lunch at The Banksia Tree Café and grab dinner at hotspot La Popular Taqueria. Foodies are spoilt for choice in this vibrant part of town.

A full music hall lit up with concert lights and people dancing at Thebarton Theatre Adelaide

Thebarton

Neighbouring Thebarton is certainly on the up. This inner west enclave is finding favour with young creatives and growing families attracted to its character homes and convenience of living next to Adelaide’s CBD. Industrial buildings have been given new life with bakeries and breweries that immediately scream cool. Brunch at Mister Sunshine, sample the all-day menu at Bloom and enjoy a lager from small-scale Brightstar Brewing (opening early 2022). For music buffs there’s the 1920s art deco Thebarton Theatre (“Thebby”) along with big-ticket performances at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

West End

Hip, happening West End is considered one of Adelaide’s trendiest enclaves for good reason. The once forgotten part of the city has been replaced by colourful laneways brimming with bars, restaurants, and galleries. Peruse the area’s boutique stores and book shops and discover its thriving creative community, including the landmark Jam Factory. From cocktail crawls to whiskey and wine, there’s a haunt to suit every taste – don’t miss Malt and Juniper, The Noble Gentleman and newcomer Shotgun Willie’s. Luring students and young professionals along with those moving from interstate, the CBD offers unbeatable convenience with everything on your doorstep.
