With its colourful streets and thriving bar and restaurant scene, eclectic Fitzroy leads the way in all things dining, drinking and living. Although gentrification has swept through, Fitzroy still retains real grit – one of its most intriguing features.

Buzzing Brunswick street keeps the hordes dancing all night long with its cheerful assortment of late night spots and BYO eateries, while Smith Street brings a more sophisticated edge into the mix. Sleek Gertrude Street is home to some of the city’s best local designers, while Johnston Street offers everything from hands-on Ethiopian cuisine to plate-smashing Greek fare.
Gentrification has swept through in a big way, yet Fitzroy still maintains real urban charm. While it certainly isn’t a hidden gem anymore, it’s still managed to retain some of the character-filled grit that made it so popular in the first place.
Neighbours
The students and artists who once filled Fitzroy’s (once crumbling) terraces have largely been priced out, and replaced with trendy white-collar types who favour converted warehouses and filter coffees.

Area features
PUB LIFE
Pubs are something of a religion in Fitzroy. Everyone has a favourite, every one claims to have the best Parma. Best test them out for yourself.
BOUTIQUE SCENE
Whether it’s wares from chic local designers or rare vintage gems, Fitzroy is the place to come to for clothes (and homewares) that offer that little something different.
SWIMMING LAPS
Fitzroy Pool is a Melbourne institution that draws bathers from near and far who come to see and be seen on the concrete steps (and do a few laps). Early mornings and summer evenings are blissful.
