Collingwood Suburb Profile

Once a true working-class suburb, Collingwood is now one of Melbourne’s coolest addresses with the cultural cachet to match. Wearing its urban past with pride, this inner-city gem is a thriving hub of creative studios, bars, galleries and restaurants, with new hot spots seemingly opening up nightly.

Living in Collingwood
The Locals

Long known as Fitzroy’s grittier neighbour, a steady flow of gentrification has seen Collingwood master some serious low-key cool of late. Possessing just the right amount of edge, what was once one of Melbourne’s roughest, toughest locales is now a cosmopolitan ode to inner-city living.

Living in Collingwood means being surrounded by record stores, galleries, and industrial-chic cafés, and the coffee here is some of the best in the city (and in bean-mad Melbourne, that’s really saying something). In fact, whether you prefer your filter of Indonesian or Guatemalan origins, the baristas in these parts are very serious about their brews. It comes as no surprise that the drinking and dining scenes in this vibrant neighbourhood are equally impressive. From cheerful Greek eateries that are best visited on an empty stomach to Ethiopian feasts best shared by hand, the food here is nothing short of world class.

And then there’s the drinking. As well as being home to a number of chic cocktail venues, Collingwood is famed for its classic pubs that boast an impressive roster of local and international acts. While it’s certainly never quiet, it’s safe to say that living in Collingwood means there’s something for everyone – day or night.

Area Features

Drinking and Dining

From iconic rough and tumble pubs to chic cocktail bars with all the trimmings, this happening neighbourhood does drinking and dining in style.

Live Music

Collingwood is home to a number of iconic live music venues known for supporting local acts and hosting wild and rowdy shows.

With its relatively small blocks of land and predilection for late night revelry, Collingwood isn’t quite the place for families. Rather, this trendy neighbourhood is home to young singles and urban workers who can’t get enough of the café culture, buzzing nightlife, impressive drinking and dining scene and close proximity to the city. While the students and working class who first called this place home have long since been priced out, demand continues to grow as would be residents clamour to have the entire city at their fingertips.
