A sophisticated design of arches and curves is fitting of Armadale's glamorous lifestyle.

Fashionable Armadale in Melbourne's south east is a charming community known for its buzzy café and shopping scene, yet it's Armadale's delightful homes with landscaped gardens that entice. And steps from Armadale's famed High Street is Orchard Piper's latest project, 35 Huntingtower Road.

The apartment complex (known as residences) celebrates the luxurious yet leisurely lifestyle of Armadale – lush gardens of climbers, mature trees, and flowering shrubs surround a design inspired by traditional European colonnades. With ten residences in the complex, it is Garden Residence 1 that the Co-director of Melbourne-based architect firm Mat Wright talks to.

BESPOKE DESIGN

What seems more like a generous size home than an apartment, Garden Residence 1 extends across two levels with three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and two expansive living areas. A lush garden spans the residence's width at the ground level – a private outdoor area with beautifully curved archways.

Inside, a defined entry gives way to an open plan living area with 3-metre high ceilings, a custom kitchen and bedrooms with sophisticated glamour. On the lower ground floor is a private lobby, accessing the cinema/games room and a separate gym or rumpus space, leading to secure garaging for four cars.

THE LOOK & FEEL

A soft palette of neutral shades is enhanced by natural materials including marble and timber, creating a serene and versatile backdrop. And the Jolson-designed custom joinery and Poliform robes throughout add to the home's luxurious feel.

"The palette is neutral, soft and textured. It provides a backdrop for the owner's personal flair and a beautiful dialogue with the texture and deep colours of the garden setting. The shadows of the foliage on the architecture and interior surfaces are playful and soothing," says Mat.

THE KITCHEN

Expansive and generous, the kitchen features an island bench that's finished in Cȏte D'Azur marble and measuring up to 3-metres long. It makes for a commanding presence in the living and entertaining rooms and has a dual purpose – a kitchen workspace and dining area.

"Elements like the kitchen island bench, where the surface is free from of functional items such as sinks or cooktops, can be used as a serving area or casual meals, combining separate features you might find in a standalone house. There is little compromise when spaces are thought about in this way, and the space is designed to be as efficient as possible."

THE BATHROOMS

Double basins, deep-set standalone bathtubs and custom-designed joinery by Jolson in neutral tones create a serene environment to the bathrooms and en-suites. And the subtle play of materials ups the luxe factor without being overbearing.

"The tile in the bathroom has a fine texture to it that's subtle, but also elevates these spaces," explains Mat.

THE GARDEN

Taking pride of place from the moment you arrive, the landscaping by Myles Baldwin is a contemporary spin on a planting style inspired by the 'gardenesque' aesthetics – a planting style you would find throughout Europe, yet feels at ease within Armadale. A tapestry of plants and climbers, that combine, create a whimsical garden where you want to just be.

"The texture of the plants Myles has selected are in line with our commitment to texture and subtleties of materials; There's a nice synergy between the garden and the architecture," says Mat.
