Jason Grant Talks Summer Styling and His Latest Projects

Jason Grant has been dubbed as Sydney’s ‘super stylist’ – and it’s not hard to wonder why. After 10 years of styling spaces for brands and magazines around the globe, he branched out, debuting a homewares collection, MJG, and releasing two decorating books. All have been huge successes, capturing his signature relaxed, lived-in style.

We caught up with the Bondi-based stylist to talk about his top spots in Sydney, why he loves creating ‘real’ spaces, and what’s next for his career.

Your career has taken you down a few different paths in recent years, and it doesn’t seem like you’ll be slowing down anytime soon! What projects are you currently working on?

I’m working on my third book with Hardie Grant, which is due out in September. I’m planning the winter MJG collection shoot and designing summer 17/18, plus a million other things. I like to be busy, but I also like downtime so I’m looking forward to some well-earned rest over summer.

Which interior design trends, stores or pieces are you loving right now?

Funnily enough, I’m suddenly loving one-of-a-kind vintage and retro pieces. I love a good market, auction house or vintage store find – it’s the thrill of the chase and the joy of finding something unique with history.

I love anything that ceramicist Bridget Bodenham creates. Her ceramics are amazing.

As for stores, Scout in St Kilda is one of the best-curated stores in the country. I can’t leave without finding something authentic and unique.

I also like working with great brands. I style all the visuals for two local favourites: Major Minor has bed linen I love to sleep in, and Bondi Wash is an all-natural botanical range that smells great.

Where are your favourite spots in Sydney to source items for styling?

  • Koskela in Rosebery
  • Cult in Chippendale
  • Hay Shop in Surry Hills
  • Small Spaces in Redfern
  • Bludot in Alexandria
  • Water Tiger in St Peters
  • The Society Inc in St Peters

Plus the Newrybar Merchants, which is just outside of Byron Bay.

What are your tips for those wanting to freshen up their homes and outdoor areas for summer?

In summer, I like to strip things back and pack away the winter textiles. Add plants in doors and open up the windows. It’s all about eating and entertaining outdoors, so perhaps think about simple ways to brighten up your tableware. Purchasing some new servingware or glassware is a great start!

How is your own home styled?

My home is relaxed, laidback and not over-styled. It’s filled with a collection of things from my journey, and it’s always an evolving space. It’s a reflection of who I am.

What is your idea of the perfect Sunday in Sydney?

Sleeping in, then having coffee and breakfast before a walk and swim with my Boston Terrier. In the afternoon, I like having drinks in the sun with friends - all low-key and local.
