The Mornington Peninsula is more than just pretty beaches, scenic walks and golf – it’s also one of Victoria’s most exciting wine regions. Known for producing brilliant pinot noirs and chardonnays, there are over 50 wineries to explore, as well as a number of unmissable dining destinations.

Barmah Park

Barmah Park, nestled in a picturesque, rural setting off Moorooduc Highway, was once a cattle station. Beautifully transformed into a ten-acre estate, this is one of the best wineries on the Mornington Peninsula for a fine dining experience. 

Boasting a cellar door and award-winning restaurant, it earned its first Chef's Hat in 2022, solidifying its status on the Mornington Peninsula as one of the must-try vineyards. 

The restaurant, with a relaxed atmosphere and serene vineyard views, offers a menu celebrating local produce. A two or three-course meal might include the likes of cheddar croquettes, baked scallops, hand-rolled ricotta gnocchi, and delightful desserts like coconut panna cotta.

The renovated space combines exposed brick and polished concrete with mid-century styling. The chic teal-tiled bar also serves up an array of local spirits. 

For a more low-key experience, visit Barmah's rustic cellar door to sample its Arthurs Seat and Lighthouse labels, for tasting among the barrels.

A detour to Barmah Park promises a tasteful escape that's off the beaten path.

Ocean Eight Winery ‍

Specialising in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, Ocean Eight is one of the most spectacular wineries on the Mornington Peninsula for sipping and swilling away the day. 

We highly recommend experiencing this impressive estate come Autumn, when the tree-lined driveway down to the cellar door feels like a scene from a movie. Vibrant foliage and manicured grounds set the scene for the experience inside, where you can taste the quality of the fruit in every sip you sample.

Stonier Wines

Discover Stonier Wines, offering some of Victoria's most outstanding wines on your next visit to the Pen. One of the first wineries in the region, Stonier is just an hour's drive from Melbourne's CBD, and is home to a range of premium wines crafted from estate vineyards. The pristine, cool-climate maritime region that the Mornington Peninsula is known for plays into some seriously delicious drops here, and you'll soon find yourself relaxing with a glass or two inside Stonier's striking cellar door - or within its picturesque grounds. Tucks Wine

Tucks Wine brings chill millennial vibes to the Pen, aiming to attract the next generation of wine lovers with its approachable setting.

Here, wine snobbery is left at the door, making room for informal blind tastings and notes scribbled on wipe-down tables. The venue features a laid-back layout, big hanging tree seats, and a 'pets welcome' policy, while also offering some spectacular 180-degree views of rolling hills and vines surrounding. 

A similar no-fuss approach applies to the food, where grazing-style eats pair best for sampling wines at the communal tasting tables, or on the big stretch of lawn.

Kooyong & Port Phillip Estate 

An architectural landmark dramatically nestled into the landscape, Port Phillip Estate is one of Australia’s most exciting food and wine destinations.

Main Ridge Estate

'An icon of the region with consistently good wines,' says James Halliday of Main Ridge Estate - and it's easy to see why. The first licenced winery on the Pen, it was established in 1975, located high on Red Hill, off-the-beaten-track in a beautiful bush valley. Forage away to find this historic cellar door; its peaceful views of the surrounding vineyard, garden and bush are more than worth the journey. 

Chief winemaker and owner James Sexton has sustained Main Ridge Estate’s rich heritage of quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winemaking, following in the footsteps of the legendary Nat White. 

Every weekend the Sexton family welcomes guests to enjoy ‘Meet the Maker’ wine tastings, relaxed lunches and casual drinks and snacks.

The on-site Larder restaurant serves simple, seasonal and generous sharing dishes, designed to complement the estate's renowned wines.

Avani Wines

This family-owned boutique winery specialises in delicious, cool climate wines. In addition to making syrah, pinot noir and chardonnay Avani Wines also make a range of vibrant skin-contact varieties. The rustic and award winning cellar door overlooks the estate vineyard and is open every weekend from 11am to 5pm. Pay a visit to this spectacular Mornington Peninsula winery for a tasting and if you can, dial it up a notch with a booking into one of the pop-up restaurant sessions and limited Summer Series they play host to. Pt Leo Estate 

Set across 130 hectares, Pt Leo Estate is one of the finest crossovers of art, wine and fine dining in the country. With two restaurants and a magnificent sculpture park providing 180-degree views over Western Port Bay, it's a real winery and design siren song to all who hear of it.

Home to 50 acres of vines that stretch up the crest of Pt. Leo Estate and curve down towards the expanse of Western Port, they all respond to the constant forces of nature, as do the wine they embody. Pt Leo's aromatic pinot gris speaks of the sun, its elegant chardonnay benefits from cool night-time breezes, and a combination of warm days and cool evenings add a layer of sophistication and complexity to the pinot noir. This family run-winery recognises that the enjoyment of wine depends on more than just how it tastes, creating an abundance of vineyard experiences for visitors. Perhaps the most delightful of these is the Summer Picnic (available from October to May), where you can grab a bottle of their award-winning pinot noir as you stroll to one of three gorgeous private picnic sites, where a set menu of delicious local fare awaits.

Ten Minutes By Tractor

Ten Minutes By Tractor is a must visit for those passionate about food and wine. Named after the convergence of three family owned Mornington Peninsula wineries (each ten minutes by tractor apart), the estate offers some of the truest expressions of the region's varieties as well as inspired dining. Having received two hats as recently as 2018, Chef Adam Sanderson’s tasting menu celebrates the incredible local produce taken from neighbouring farms, the kitchen garden and ingredients foraged from around the region.

Quealy

Katherine Quealy and Kevin McCarthy were among the early wave of winemakers to move to the Mornington Peninsula, yet their output has consistently been some of the most innovative and elaborate. They were the first in Australia to plant friulano, and with the help of their son, Tom, they’re creating some of the region's finest skin-contact wines. Visit on the weekend and the elegant chatelaine Louise will happily regale you about the winemaking process over a made-to-order cheese platter.

Red Hill Estate

Few things go better with fine wine than a great view, and the sweeping vistas from Red Hill Estate's cellar door and restaurant, overlooking Westernport Bay, are some of the grandest around. Known as one of the best wineries on the Mornington Peninsula, the cellar door is open daily from 11am-5pm and if you’re looking for seasonally-inspired modern-italian dining, Max’s Restaurant is a surefire winner.

Paringa Estate

Established by school teacher turned winemaker Lindsey McCall in 1985, Paringa Estate has consistently turned out some of Australia’s top chardonnay, pinot noir and cool-climate shiraz. Arrive on the weekend to sample some of their iconic single-vineyard wines and stay for an intimate dining experience at their two-hatted restaurant, overlooking the valley and beyond.

Myrtaceae

With the highest elevation of any winery in the region, Myrtacae offers a quiet and relaxing wine adventure for those happy to divert from the beaten track. Apart from a gorgeous garden setting, you’ll be rewarded with a unique “rolling tasting” experience (rolling special Riedel glasses on their side to unlock the aromas) led by owners John and Julie Trueman, who also grow the grapes and make the wines.

Polperro

Famous for their single-vineyard pinot noirs, chardonnay and pinot gris, Polperro Wines follow a mix of organic and biodynamic principles making them one of the best wineries on the Mornington Peninsula. You can visit their intimate cellar-door space for a wine-flight, or book a picnic for two in the vineyard and sample some local delights. You might even choose to extend your stay with boutique accommodation in the rustic-chic Polperro Farmhouse and wake up to a workout at HotHut Yoga, located on the estate.

Phaedrus Estate

Winemakers and owners Ewan and Maitena love to welcome visitors onto their splendorous 5-acre winery and cellar door (all of which they built themselves) to taste their soulful, full-flavoured and balanced drops. And if you’re at the stage of your wine tour where your palate is starting to fatigue, Phaedrus have also launched their Mornington Peninsula Distillery Beach Box Gin, available for tasting at the cellar door.

Yabby Lake

Home to the first-ever pinot noir to claim the Jimmy Watson trophy, Yabby Lake offers an unbelievable range of wines to taste at their laid-back cellar door. Alongside a bottle of pinot noir or chardonnay, visitors can enjoy settling down on the deck for a long lunch (followed by Market Lane Coffee) and admiring the exceptional collection of Australian art.

Rare Hare is the fun and funky winery and restaurant attached to the famed Jackalope Hotel.
