10 of the Best Vietnamese Restaurants Across Sydney

So, you’ve tried all of Sydney’s best ph? joints, now it’s time to immerse yourself in every other Vietnamese dish your heart desires. We’ve put together our favourite places to visit for a fresh bánh mi or rice paper roll to rival Hanoi’s best.

Viet

Nestled within Chippendale’s buzzing Spice Alley, Viet brings fresh ingredients, full-bodied broths and pungent spices together to create a comprehensive menu of classic Vietnamese cuisine. Start out with a trio of pork and prawn dumplings before honing on a Hanoi chicken with turmeric rice or the braised pork shoulder. A side of the papaya salad will balance it out nicely.

14 Kensington Street, Chippendale

Chao Ba

The indoor-outdoor space of this Chatswood venue is a locals’ favourite, with everything from salads to stir fries to soups created with traditional Vietnamese flavours and fresh ingredients. The Bánh Khot prawn on crispy turmeric and coconut pancakes is the perfect segue into the Bo Buong La Lop board with chargrilled beef wrapped in betel leaves for you to assemble yourself.

5/409 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood

Great Aunty Three

Street-food inspired, Great Aunty Three’s owner and head chef Michael brings authentic Vietnamese flavours and cooking styles to the menu, thanks to his Grandmother’s family recipes and insurmountable love of the cuisine. The roast duck, pork and lemongrass chicken rice paper rolls followed by a barramundi salad are a must and the chicken and beef ph? are impossible to fault.

115 Enmore Road, Enmore

94 Wentworth Avenue, Surry Hills

Hello Auntie

While this Marrickville venue has a devoted following thanks to their moreish iterations of vegan ph?, soup isn’t the only dish that gets people coming back time and time again. For instance, try turning down the crispy coconut and turmeric crepe, the twice cooked pork belly or the black sesame and egg plant ravioli with Sichuan buerre blanc and yoghurt.

278 Illawarra Road, Marrickville

So 9

Translating to ‘Number 9’, the digit is rather auspicious in Vietnamese culture and we’ve do doubt you’ll be in luck when paying this Waterloo venue a visit. Bringing together a Vietnamese street-food inspired menu, So 9’s salad, roll and bánh offering is second to none, with the bun chao tom and the lemongrass beef rice paper rolls must-order dishes.

CASBA, 1/18 Dank Street, Waterloo

Mr Bao

Mr Bao

Offering a Vietnamese/Japanese twist on the Taiwanese street food favourite – Gua Baos, Mr Bao’s buns are things of sheer beauty. The handmade, pillow-soft steamed buns are laden with a host of fillings, from the crackling pork belly bao to the karaage chicken bao, we strongly recommend sampling at least three of these magnificent creations alongside the soft-shell crab golden dippers.

56 York Street, Sydney

An Restaurant

Specialising in traditional Northern style Vietnamese Ph?, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better spot for the beloved soup anywhere. The basic fit out of the venue could not be more at odds with the quality of the Ph? which is offered with various cuts of beef or chicken, with fresh rice noodles, herbs, bean sprouts added before topping with a steaming hot, fragrant, broth.

27 Greenfield Parade, Bankstown

Hem Nine Nine

This Vietnamese kitchen offers traditional fare alongside more modern iterations to appeal to the folk of Glebe who know their bánh from their bún. The squid ink seafood fried rice is perfect for sharing and the duck and mushroom wonton ravioli is delicious. The crab slider teams impeccably with the inventive salted fish taco with Viet slaw, salsa and lime on a toasted pancake.

99 Glebe Point Road, Glebe

Phood

Phood holds a coveted position as the bearer of high-calibre Vietnamese in what is a seriously competitive enclave. With just over one hundred dishes filling their encyclopaedic menu, whatever your Vietnamese favourites are, Phood has it. The stir-fried chilli lemongrass beef with salad is a great place to start; with steamed pork rice flour rolls and the curry roasted duck hot pot equally popular.

3a/72-76 Archer Street, Chatswood

Ph? Tau Bay

Ph? Tau Boy is consistently brimming with hopeful customers who are clearly not there for the simple décor, but the overwhelmingly tasty Vietnamese fare. With dishes teamed with six options of noodle, whether you opt for the Ph? Do Bien seafood Ph? or the Mi Ga chicken with egg noodle you won’t be disappointed. FYI the fish congee is another signature dish with plenty of devotees.
