Fenton & Fenton Home Décor: How to Style Your Home Like A Pro

With an impeccable eye for style and an interiors collection worth shouting about, Lucy Fenton is one designer/stylist with serious credentials. Inspired by her globe-trotting adventures around India, Morocco and Europe, her unique homeware store – and one of Melbourne’s finest – Fenton & Fenton (part interiors boutique, part gallery) is a treasure trove of vintage one-off finds, fusing bold colours and textiles with beautiful furniture, statement artwork, and quirky objects sourced from near and far.

Her boutique, and her home, are constant sources of inspiration (we could easily spend hours scrolling through her swoon-worthy Instagram account  – Fenton & Fenton is the epitome of effortlessly eclectic, adventurous style. So, for anyone looking for design inspiration, you’ve come to the right place. We were lucky enough to sit down with Lucy to talk trends, decorating tips – and mishaps – and her favourite homeware finds.

Tell us a little about you?

I’m a Melburnian. 10 years ago, after a spontaneous trip to India, I was inspired to open my own homeware store. I wanted to create a unique space that didn’t just sell one kind of period furniture or art, but pieces sourced locally and abroad that could sit together in a way that hadn’t been done before. And so, Fenton & Fenton was born. It’s a mix of all the things I love and would have in my home!

It’s been such a huge journey to get to where we are now – but being extremely passionate has been the key. I love what I do, so working hard hasn’t seemed like a chore (most of the time anyway).  We now have a team of 25 and sell our collection in-store and online Australia wide. We also have many international customers. Our store in Prahran is an ever-evolving showroom / gallery / retail space. We represent over 30 Australian artists and we host many exhibitions each year in store.

What first attracted you the world of interior design?

It was a love for travel that came first – that was from a very young age. We travelled to Europe when I was about 8 years old, and I was hooked from then on. I remember throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain, visiting countless galleries, exploring the Cinque Terre and indulging in amazing food. Art and interiors grew from the travel. Being exposed to so many interesting places, artifacts and colours in different places around the world fuelled my desire to open the store. My collections are a celebration of memories and adventure.

Describe your style in three words

Unique, Colourful, Adventurous.

Favourite piece in your home?

I don’t have a favourite, per se, but it’s my art collection that gives me the most pleasure. Art is like music for me; it has the power to transport you back to specific moments in your life – different pieces resonate with you at different times.

Favourite piece in your store?

I’m loving our new Hollywood Range, it’s got that glamourous LA vibe – rich coloured velvets mixed with brushed brass detail, very cool.

Trend picks?

I try and avoid trends, but I love that people are embracing mixing styles and eras. More and more people are open to experimenting and finding their own unique style, which is so exciting.

Most indulgent purchase?

Our Togo Sofa was a big one and a few special pieces of artwork over the years

Go-to for interiors inspiration?

Inspiration can come from anywhere, but I find travel so inspiring – not only what you see on your travels but having that break from my day to day routine really works wonders for me. I always come back from a trip bursting with new ideas and just a fresh outlook on life.

What colours, materials and textures do you love working with the most?

I love natural stones – marble, rose quartz, onyx, terrazzo, the list goes on. Also, leather, velvet, silk, wool – it’s more so the combinations of mixing these textures that excites me most.

What makes a home perfect?

A home is perfect when you love being there. For me it should tell a story of who you are, where you have been and what you love.

Top three tips for adding style to the home?

1. Quality - Invest in quality key pieces. Save up and buy the pieces you really want, don’t rush into a lesser option, you will regret it.

2. Art – Choose art that resonates with you, if you fall in love with it, buy it!

3. Layers – Create depth and interest to your home by having lots of layers, this can be achieved by introducing different textures and materials throughout a space.

Decorating rules?

Never cut corners with sofas – you want them to be super comfortable and look great. They can be large bulky items so if you get it wrong, they can ruin a space.

Most common decorating mistakes?

Art work hung too high and rugs that are too small for the space – when it comes to rugs just remember bigger is always better!

A boutique hotel – either in Australia or abroad, I am not picky!

What sets Fenton & Fenton apart from other interior stores?

The mix of eras, styles and colours, and the way in which we put them together. The store is always changing – no two days are ever the same!
