Work up a Sweat at Melbourne’s Best Outdoor Fitness Classes

Perhaps you’ve had enough of the gym but can’t quite muster the energy to pound the pavement solo. Whether morale is running low, or you’re just craving a change of scenery – there’s nothing quite like an outdoor fitness session to get your blood pumping and stamina soaring. As we fully embrace the summer, join us in working (out) our way through Melbourne’s best outdoor exercise classes.

Princes Park Fitness

Forget harsh lighting and generic gym soundtracks – Princes Park Fitness have made a name for themselves by training out in the open air. Their workout is designed to challenge the body aerobically (think racing heart rate), and anaerobically (think wobbly legs and fatigued muscles). By the end of each session you’ll well and truly deserve to kick back and relax in one of Melbourne’s finest parks.

121 Princes Park Drive, Carlton North

One for the ladies, MFW is an all-female boot camp held in South Yarra’s Fawkner Park. The makeup of each session is different, so boredom won’t strike and your body won’t get used to the same old routine. From abs, butt and thighs to circuits, boxing and cardio – there’s no better way to start the day than working up a sweat in good company.

24-88 Commercial Road, South Yarra

The Mo Moran Outdoor Reserve Gym

Designed especially for those who want to practise their strength training in the glory of the great outdoors, the Mo Moran Outdoor Reserve Gym boasts some of the city’s best calisthenics equipment. With everything from multiple height pull up and dip bars to incline benches, a ladder station and even a balance beam – the only limit to your workout is your imagination.

54A Marine Parade, Elwood

From mums and bubs, to office buddies; group classes to lone rangers – whatever workout you’re into, FitStyler has it covered. Starting out in the leafy Edinburgh gardens, they now offer a wide range of classes in an even wider range of locations. Tailoring their boot camp style to suit you and your gang – these guys have made an art of outdoor exercise.

Alfred Crescent, Fitzroy North

Bridge Fitness

You can’t beat a beachside workout. Set up on the picturesque Elwood Foreshore, Bridge Fitness’s group workout classes migrate into the Elwood Angling Club during cooler months – which comes complete with beautiful beach views. Each class gives women the tools they need to develop the body they want, all the while being part of a supportive team environment.

Hoops, Thighs and Buttocks

Looking for a fitness class with a difference? Get your lycra on and join Hoops, Thighs and Buttocks for a workout that will get your hips moving, your core activated and that hoop twirling. Their joyful classes cover all the basics, as well as fancy tricks so you can show off to your friends, and are located both indoors and outdoors (when the sun is shining).

67 Argyle St, St Kilda

Progression Fitness

Offering everything from boot camp to outdoor yoga, Progression Fitness is all about ditching the confines of the gym for the wonders of fresh air and the support of a likeminded team. They want you to forget what you know about generic group training classes and instead, teach you how to move your body correctly, develop strength and boost your cardiovascular fitness.

Flagstaff Gardens, 309-311 William St, West Melbourne

Healthy Balance Fitness

You’ve likely heard of HIIT by now (aka High Intensity Interval Training). A series of fast moving exercises with short rests in between where you can stop and catch your breath, this style of workout has been proven to get results. Fast. The Healthy Balance Fitness team’s HIIT Boot Camp is inclusive, supportive (they promise there’s no military style yelling) and a whole lot of fun.
