Top of the Pops: Melbourne’s Unmissable Winter Pop-up Events
With the advent of winter comes the innate desire to stay indoors, order UberEATS and binge watch your favourite murder doco. But don’t let the cooler temps and drizzly evenings stop you from living your best life… outdoors.
Although summer is the season the city comes alive, Melbourne is equally exciting in the wintertime. To help coax you out of your seasonal blues, across the city there are festivals, pop-ups and events that make the most of the crisp climate.
From night markets and restaurant pop-ups, to crêperie caravans and urban igloos, here are the awesome things to do in Melbourne this winter.
For a cosy mid-week escape, you can’t go past the winter edition of Queen Vic’s bustling night markets, which will feature food stalls hawking everything from American barbecue and melted cheese baguettes to cinnamon-dusted churro bowls. Warm up with cups of Mork hot chocolate and mulled wine before roaming the arts and homewares traders or squeezing in a boogie at the silent disco.
From now until 28th August
Queen St, Melbourne
The cuisines of Texas and Japan may seem like an unlikely allegiance, but at this pop-up kitchen hosted by the Grand Hyatt they’ve married the smoky barbecued flavours of the American South with some our favourite Japanese dishes. The fusion menu includes heavy hitters like wagyu brisket ramen in smoked beef broth and pork baby back ribs smothered in chipotle soy glaze, while an extensive dessert menu covers everything from mochi and taiyaki to red velvet cake and caramelised pecan pie.

Escape to a snowy alpine wonderland at Fed Square’s Winter Village. No plane ticket required – this snow-specked hangout is in the heart of the CBD – you and your friends can set up camp inside their cosy private igloos for the ultimate winter gathering. Packages come fully catered, with options like caramel hot toddies, antipasto boxes, pizza and espresso martini ice cream pops. When you decide to step outside, there’s also a mega igloo where it snows indoors, plus an ice-skating rink where you can twist and twirl all night long – talk about winter dreams.

Back by popular demand, The Imperial rooftop has transformed into a magical winter escape, perfect for any witchcraft and wizardry fan.
Kitted out like Diagon Alley, with whimsical shopfronts and authentic décor, each private booth– kept cosy under the large marquee – is its own store. From Parliament Wands and MacArthur Broomsticks, to Imperial Potions Co and Spring St Spell Books, each space provides the perfect winter sanctuary.
Better still, The Imperial team have worked their magic to create bespoke potions for cocktail lovers. Be sure to sip on a gin and elderflower infused Chuckle Juice, before attempting the flaming Fire Whiskey. And be careful with the fruity Love Potion and rum-laden Imperial Tattletale.
From now until 1st September
From 11am daily
2-8 Bourke Street, Melbourne
The sprawling four-level Garden State Hotel has joined forces with self-proclaimed ‘Asian street-food tuckshop’ Misschu for a delectable pop-up experience this winter. In the beer garden you will find the Misschu pop-up kiosk serving the Vietnamese street eats that the ‘healthy hawker’ is infamous for; rice paper rolls and dumplings anyone? Since you are in the Garden State Hotel you may as well pair your street food treats with a Midori mule or Garden State spritz – it would be rude not to.
From now until 18th August
From 12pm daily

It’s a good job we’re into night markets, because there’s another wintry edition in full swing this July. The European Night Market on Madame Brussels Lane celebrates the flavours and traditions of European cuisine, serving everything from Polish pierogis and Spanish paella to melted French raclette and Greek sweets. The laneway will be filled with like-minded foodies, and roaming entertainment, with Fleiss laying down the night market soundtrack. Grab a drink from the team at Little Lon Distilling Co and settle in for an unforgettable night.
