5 Mood Boosting Foods You Need to Eat More of Each Day

Given the current state of affairs and how much change we're going through, collectively, it is hard to keep your energy and mood bright and positive.

With 90% of your serotonin receptors located in the gut, it’s a no-brainer that what we eat is intrinsically linked with our mood. With that in mind, we can help boost our mood through our diet.

Nutritionist and Dietitian Susie Burrell says that one way to improve your mood with food is by eating whole foods and increasing your fibre intake, to create a slow release of sugar and keep energy levels stable.

Similarly, when following restrictive diet regimes such as Paleo, Keto and Low Carb, they omit a large number of mood boosting foods, are rarely sustainable and lack the dietary balance required for weight control and optimal nutritional intake long term. 

To help you improve your mood, these are the five mood boosting foods you should start incorporating into your diet each day.

1. Beans & Lentils

Humble beans and lentils are full of feel good nutrients that provide a source of B vitamins to increase levels of neurotransmitters- the body's chemical messengers sending good vibes all around (i.e. serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric acid).

2. Oats

Oats provide an excellent source of fibre which creates a slow release of sugar to keep your energy levels stable throughout the day.

3. Nuts & Seeds

Add these to your diet for a solid source of tryptophan, an amino acid responsible for producing serotonin, your chemical messenger for mood stablisation. 

4. Berries

We can't get enough of berries! Packed full of antioxidants that play a role in combating oxidative stress (imbalance of harmful compounds in the body which can impact your overall health).

5. Bananas

Our favourite breakfast snack, Bananas are high in vitamin B6, which help activate neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine and, ultimately, help your body's ability to stabilise your mood.
