The 10 Best Australian TV Shows to Watch this Weekend
We've rounded up the very best Australian television series to help you choose your next favourite show.
In the mood for something to binge? Our talented local creatives have created some truly iconic television and binge-able content. We’ve got you covered with a list of epic Australian television series from light-hearted comedy to gripping psychodramas.
Please Like Me (2013 – 2018)
From the eclectic, eccentric mind of our very own Josh Thomas, Please Like Me is a hilarious and honest depiction of the lives of twenty-somethings in Melbourne. From the opening scene where, over a $19 sundae, Josh’s girlfriend Claire breaks up with him because “I feel like we’ve drifted, you know? Also, you’re gay.” we see that Please Like Me is going to depict the lives of twentysomethings in a sincerely shambolic way. A bittersweet dramedy that thrives in the grey areas of life, never shying away from taboo subjects, this series is utterly watchable and endlessly endearing.
Bump (2021)
Bump is a quintessentially Australian dramedy about how sometimes the best things in life can be completely unplanned. When the high-achieving, high-strung year 11 student Oly has a baby completely by surprise, she is thrown for a loop and, over the course of the season, we watch her friends and family attempt to adapt, improvise and overcome their way through life with baby Jacinda (named after Jacinda Ardern, of course!). It’s a truly heart-warming show and season two premieres Boxing Day 2021 so there’s time to binge the whole lot before then!
Puberty Blues (2012 – 2014)
Those cheeky little moles, Sue and Debbie, had an absolute chokehold on teens from the 80s to the 2010s. Perfect for your dose of nostalgia, it’s on Netflix so you can binge your way through a classic Shire coming of age story!
Utopia (2014 - 2019)
This award-winning satirical comedy is practically a mandatory viewing for any public servant. Follow Tony and the team at the Nation Building Authority as they try to make Australia a better place whilst grappling with politicians and blundering bureaucrats. It’s even more absurd than real live politics which, in Australia, is really saying something.
Rake (2010 – 2018)
Rake is a series all about lowering the bar. Thanks to everyone’s problematic fave, Cleaver Greene, is a barrister with a level of messiness in his professional life which is only mirrored by his absolutely chaotic personal life.

Offspring (2010 – 2017)
Meet the Proudman’s the family who puts the fun in dysfunctional. With seven whole seasons to catch up on, this is a veritable saga! Add this one to your ‘to be binged’ list immediately.
Old People’s Home For Four-Year Olds
Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for the best show ever made. The heart-warming reality-series brings preschoolers and elderly people together to help them learn how to connect and to prompt us all to weep uncontrollably at their adorable friendships. The little ones learn about the past and the old folks relish in the unconditional love of these preschoolers.
The Cry (2018)
This gripping psycho-mystery follows a couple who travel from Scotland to Australia and on the way their baby son goes missing. In the aftermath of the tragedy and the media storm that follows, their relationship and every action is scrutinised. Are they guilty?
The Letdown (2018-2019)
Sleep deprived and at her wit’s end the mother of a two month old baby joins a parent support group. The group run by Ambrose – played by Australia’s mum, Noni Hazelhurst – is full of a diverse and passionate cast of young parents.
Upright (2019)
Let us begin by saying we love Tim Minchin. We really do. In this road trip classic, two misfits are brought together by chance and they forge a bond as they do whatever it takes transport a piano from one side of the country to another. It’s written and produced by Tim Minchin so it’s got his impeccable stamp of approval.
